    In the millennial year of our lord--John the Dragonslayer, the undying monarch of Tier and High King of the Nine Forsworn Realms--eight knights converge upon Canaan Castle to represent their respective kingdoms in a tournament. Those who prove themselves worthy shall join the (diminished) ranks of the ageless Dragonslayer Knights. With them, their lieges shall ascend to the High King's court, where they shall have His Majesty's ear for all eternity. Or at least for as long as their knights survive.

    Sir Gideon of Drearburh was raised to be a footsoldier, not a knight. She is, however, the closest thing to a knight that the Kingdom of Hadea can muster. Her liege, Princess Harrowhark, wishes to join the High King's court that she might seek aide for her people in their ongoing famine. Sir Gideon never wants to return to Hadea again. If Gideon places well in the games, both their needs shall be served. Unfortunately Sir Gideon can barely ride a horse.

    Sir Naberius of Ida, in contrast, is a veteran of the tournament circuit. He is certain to place highly. Or, at least *he* thinks so. And he is quite happy to be forever 23.

    Both Gideon and Naberius ought to know by now that magic always comes at a price.

    By the time the precinct had hired Harrowhark for her consulting services there had already been six murders over the span of 6 months, roughly a murder a month. Almost like the killer was keeping a schedule.

    They hadn’t deviated from their time frame, always kept steady. It was unnerving the amount of restraint they had in that regard.
    The public were demanding answers, as the body count steadily rose with no suspect in sight. They wanted this monster put behind bars, they wanted justice.

    Or

    Gideon is a detective working on a case that has to do with a serial killer and Harrow is hired on as a consultant to help solve the case.

    Harrowhark poked a finger into Gideon’s forearm. “Radius,” Harrowhark mumbled, nonsensical, before wrapping her little hand around to grip Gideon’s arm tightly, pressing her fingers into the underside of Gideon’s arm below her elbow. Her nails were sharp where they dug into her skin. “Ulna.”
    “What-” Gideon rasped. She cleared her throat. “What are you doing?”
    Harrowhark grinned, and her eyes were two dark wells Gideon wanted to throw wishes into. “Showing you how much I know about human anatomy,” she said, her voice half ironic. She was definitely a little bit making fun of Gideon, which may or may not have been making Gideon definitely a little bit weak in the knees.
    “Your hands are really fucking cold,” Gideon whispered, because they were, because she didn’t trust herself to say anything else.
    Harrowhark leaned in, grinning like a shark. “That’s because I’m dead.”
    “Fuck.” Gideon loved goth girls.
