Summary
In the millennial year of our lord--John the Dragonslayer, the undying monarch of Tier and High King of the Nine Forsworn Realms--eight knights converge upon Canaan Castle to represent their respective kingdoms in a tournament. Those who prove themselves worthy shall join the (diminished) ranks of the ageless Dragonslayer Knights. With them, their lieges shall ascend to the High King's court, where they shall have His Majesty's ear for all eternity. Or at least for as long as their knights survive.
Sir Gideon of Drearburh was raised to be a footsoldier, not a knight. She is, however, the closest thing to a knight that the Kingdom of Hadea can muster. Her liege, Princess Harrowhark, wishes to join the High King's court that she might seek aide for her people in their ongoing famine. Sir Gideon never wants to return to Hadea again. If Gideon places well in the games, both their needs shall be served. Unfortunately Sir Gideon can barely ride a horse.
Sir Naberius of Ida, in contrast, is a veteran of the tournament circuit. He is certain to place highly. Or, at least *he* thinks so. And he is quite happy to be forever 23.
Both Gideon and Naberius ought to know by now that magic always comes at a price.

In the refectory, He told Samael and Anastasia to sit at the table, and then got them each one of the smaller breakable plates that adults ate salad off of at lunchtime. He put a ginger biscuit on each plate.
“I am going to make myself a cup of tea,” God said. “When I get back, I will give anyone who hasn’t touched their biscuit yet a second one.”

Cytherea the First was not meant to become a Lyctor. Cytherea the First was not even meant to become a necromancer, not really. Cytherea the First was meant to die while she was still young and beautiful and tragic, where people could talk about how green her eyes had been and how lovely her smile once was for years to come.
But that wasn't what happened. So how did she get here?

Summary
You think about my last moments, from time to time. You think of the gasp that left my throat, of the wideness of the eyes that now rest in your sockets. You hear Corona’s screams, while tasting the tang of my blood in your mouth as you forced my soul down your throat–all while trying to drown out Corona’s sobs.
Is THIS why you can’t look at Augustine the First at all, as he drowns? Is this why you instead focus on shooting the breeze with the Necrolord Prime–as if your big brother lyctor isn't dying because of you at this very instant?
After dooming him, you can’t even do him the honor of looking him in the eyes.
...honestly, this is so on brand for you, Ianthe.
OR, Ianthe makes a decision on who to save, and the guy whose soul she ate judges her about it.

Summary
Finally, Alfred wheezes out, “Mercy! Mercy, please, ahaha!”
Begging for mercy is Augustine’s cue to stop. Thus satisfied with his revenge, he gradually slows to a stop. He doesn’t register the footsteps behind him, much lighter than Cristabel’s should be, until it’s too late.
“Fine, but just this once,” says the most hateful person in the universe, affecting a put-upon tone like she’s making some sort of charitable sacrifice.
That familiar irritating voice is the only warning Augustine gets before a hand lands roughly on his shoulder, and then he just about falls over as his body seizes with laughter.
—
Or: Alfred begs Mercy to save him from a tickle fight. She agrees to help, at Augustine’s great expense.

Summary
Well, that didn’t go to plan, did it?
That was Augustine’s first thought as the man he’d called God released him to the stoma.
His second thought was of Alfred. Really, all his thoughts were of Alfred. Alfie, his forever-smiling brother who had so much belief and nowhere to put it. That boy was made for reverence and kneeling. The perfect disciple. He would have been a better saint. Augustine couldn’t remember the last time he’d ever believed in anything.
His third thought was of Mercy.
