The two had been drifting apart lately. And of course, she was worried about that. And so was he.
And so, on that very quiet morning-- the late summer of 1965, he had woken up with the voice of his partner whose head had rested against his chest. Her voice, it was quiet.
“Shuichi… we need a vacation.”

Rex Lapis is dead. The Liyue Qixing hold an authoritarian grip over the city. The Adepti are bound to the land and the people by contracts they made eons ago, indentured into eternal servitude where they are captured and imprisoned, waiting for the terms of their individual contracts to be invoked.
Alatus-- once known to the people as Xiao-- has spent too long dreaming of a way out... he dreams of salvation in blood, relief from the prison that's held him for ages.
His contract is invoked by the strange, enigmatic director of Wangsheng Funeral Parlor. Hu Tao is unpredictable, spontaneous, and holds an unexpected reverence for the Adepti.
He doesn't trust her, but she doesn't expect him to.
