Summary
Shivering, Nicky draws in tighter on himself. The room they’re being held in is small, but it’s drafty. The vents keep letting in more bursts of air, and they took Nicky on his evening run. He’s wearing shorts and a T-shirt, and the sweat has long-since become cold and clammy against his skin. He has no real concept of how long they’ve been in here, but he knows it’s been at least three hours. That makes it past midnight. There are goosebumps on his knees.
To his left, Joe shifts.
Nicky starts.
“It’s okay,” Joe says, voice hushed. It’s an improvement over the first hour, when he wouldn’t stop calling for help even though there was clearly no one listening. “We’ll be warmer closer together.”

Al-Kaysani toys with the handle of his coffee cup. “We’re all professionals,” he says eventually. “I’m excited to see what he’ll bring to the pitch.”

Bradley almost makes a phone sex joke in response, but Jake’s voice is so nakedly longing he can’t get it over his lips. It’s two in the morning in Pensacola and Bradley’s already running on too little sleep, but they haven’t talked in more than a week.

Summary
The thing is, he and Bradshaw aren’t friends.
They’ve never been friends.
There was a hazy period, when their paths crossed in flight school and no one had a callsign yet, when they might have been, but Jake had ruined that by being himself–interested in his own advancement and little else. He wasn’t exactly the kind of guy who kept in touch with his classmates after the fact. Coyote’s just lucky they were stationed together.
But Bradshaw…well, the next time they saw each other, their paths had diverged. Their callsigns had been set and their chance at friendship had been gone. Everything that’s come since was something else.
“So what do you say, Seresin?” Payback asks.
Jake blinks. He zoned out, missed the terms of the bet. If he says yes, he’s agreeing to who knows what. If he says no, he’s a coward. “I’m in,” he says.
Or, Jake agrees on a bet to get the most phone numbers in a night.

“Wait, there was an actual proposal?” Javy asks. “Wow, I didn’t think…”
Bradley glares at him. “Seriously? Did you people imagine we just tripped and fell through the wrong door in city hall?”
“I thought maybe you went to Vegas,” Fritz pipes up.
“I’m still not convinced it’s not a tax scam,” Bob adds.
“Now that you bring it up,” Jake says thoughtfully, “he did mention the tax breaks when he proposed.”
Or, X times someone else observed Jake and Bradley as a married couple and tried to understand how exactly that happened.

“Where does this leave us?” Bradley asks eventually.
Jake snorts. “In what way?”
Bradley shrugs. “I don’t know. Emotionally, physically. Legally.”
Jake thinks he might be dizzy. He hasn’t drunk that much tonight, but he has been wondering about the answers to that question for a long time. Finally talking about it…it barely even feels real. “Let’s start with the last one,” he says. “That sounds like the easiest part.”
“Well,” Bradley says gamely. “Legally speaking, I think we’re, like, one piece of paper away from being married.”

Hangman’s breathing hard when they pull apart, his chest rising and falling unevenly in his uniform shirt.
“You’ve been wanting to do that a while,” Bradley observes.
Hangman doesn’t say anything, but the look he throws Bradley is wretched.
Bradley swallows. He reaches out, traces the line of Hangman’s jaw with his thumb. “We don’t have to talk about it, if you don’t want,” he says.
They don’t.
Or: This wouldn't be easy if they were all emotionally mature adults. The fact that they are not only makes it harder.

“Really?” Yusuf asks incredulously as he watches them. “I mean, really?”
Andromache grins at him over Booker’s shoulder as they complete another careful quarter-turn on the space cleared out on the wood floor of the cabin.
“It’s very…decorative,” Nico allows. He’s sat next to the oven smoking a pipe, which is a nasty habit he picked up at some point in the last decade acting as a manservant in a half-dozen failed peace talks across Europe.
“It’s romantic,” Booker protests. “The British thought it was scandalous fifty odd years ago.”
Impatiently, Yusuf waves a hand. “The British think ankles are scandalous.”
Or: the team has to sneak into a fancy dress party for reasons. Yusuf learns to love the waltz.

Nicky blinks at her. His expression is stony solid otherwise. “Because I am not capable of forming my own opinions?”

“I still don’t have a boyfriend to bring to the stupid Starbucks holiday party,” Joe said mulishly.
“So you invent some dashing, romantic reason he couldn’t make it,” Nicky said.
When he shook his head, Joe’s curls wobbled a bit. Not for the first time, Nicky restrained the urge to reach out and touch. “There’s nothing dashing or romantic about missing a date,” Joe said firmly.
“He’s a surgeon who had to perform open-heart surgery on a four-year-old to get her home in time for Christmas,” Nicky offered. “He’s a fireman busy putting out electrical fires in overdecorated houses.”
Joe burst out laughing. “Who would believe that?”
Or: Joe asks Nicky to be his fake date to the holiday party at the Starbucks across the street from his little independent café-slash-bookstore. Nicky has no self-preservation and is completely in love with Joe, so of course he agrees.

When Nile and Lykon pretend to date so they can finally sleep in one of the better beds in Andy's safehouses, it seems like a decent plan. It’s not a sustainable plan, or a well thought out plan, but it is a way for Nile to finally find one single solitary perk in the new life she’s been thrust into. However, soon enough, Nile realizes she hasn't considered how dating another immortal will affect the dynamics of a team she's only just joined, or how lying to that team will make her feel. Already struggling to adapt and unsure of her place in the group she’s found herself in, Nile is soon torn between pursuing what started out as a fake relationship but might have real potential and coming clean to the group.
Will her uncertainty about the work the team does and her relationship with Lykon damage her still fragile relationships to the group beyond repair? Is she even ready to be part of a new family? A canon divergence AU in which Lykon lives.

Already standing in his customary position above the captain’s chair, legs wide, arms clasped behind his back, chief of security Nicolò di Genova doesn’t even flinch when Joe walks in. He probably gets up at six on the dot to comb all his hair precisely into place and iron his mustard-yellow uniform.
“We’re not actually military, you know that, right?” Joe mutters to him for the second time this week as he slides into his bridge position, which is a sort of casual lean against the first officer’s chair.
“I see you’ve forgotten your comm,” di Genova responds, just like he did yesterday. “Again.”
Same old di Genova, reliably a shit.
In which The Guard, one of Starfleet’s flagships flying under the unorthodox command of Captain Andromache Scythian, keeps reliving the same Tuesday.

“Joe,” Nicky breathes.
“What do you think?” Joe asks, not daring to turn around.
In an instant, Nicky’s warm body collides with Joe’s back, sending goosebumps all down his exposed skin; Nicky’s mouth attaches to his neck, pressing hungry, gentle kisses to the space between where his hair ends and where the flimsy spaghetti strap of the silky negligee he’s wearing strains to fit around his shoulder.

Joseph only winked as he undid the belt of his robe. “The human body is never cause for shame,” he said, and let the robe fall to the floor.
