Penelope is hosting a weaving festival in Kefalonia, and the men are left alone to fend for themselves. Odysseus fully expects Polites to use the opportunity to torment him in bed: teasing, edging, ruining his life… the usual.

During the welcome banquet, one of the newly arrived kings, Schedius, son of Iphitus, leader of the Phocians, publicly humiliates Patroclus by calling him "Achilles’ pórnoi", as it is said in Hellas. His whore.
Deipyrus, the young therapon of another of the newly arrived kings, on the other hand, finds Patroclus a man worthy of admiration and respect. And perhaps something more.

“Achilles!” Automedon cries, between pants for air. He pulls the chariot in front of Achilles, blocking his path. Achilles' grip tightens on his sword. He feels more animal than man, wild and furious. His need for bloodshed so strong that he can taste it.
“Get out of my way,” he growls. “Or I will kill you myself.”
Automedon visibly shrinks.
“Prince Achilles,” he says, voice trembling. “I-”
“Well,” Achilles barks. “What is it? You are wasting my time. Do not think I will not-”
“It’s Patroclus!” He realizes then that he has interrupted his prince, and his hands begin to tremble as he tightens his hold on the horses’ reins. He watches the shift of emotion pass over Achilles’ face. Anger, to fear, then back to anger.
“What of him?” And though his voice is dripping with fury, Automedon can hear the underlying hint of distress within his words.
“He speaks.”
