It’s not unpleasant, just overpowering now that he’s close, and it makes something in Viago’s gut shift to be drinking so deeply and thinking of Anton at the same time. Life is full of intimacies, an immortal life exponentially so, but there are still some he does not like to get crossed. Two of them are friend and food.
He wonders what it would be like to eat Anton up.

Wolf Two: he’s too good, pretty, kind, funny, clever, mad, sparkling, precious, cultured, educated, good, good, good to be in your grubby hands. Wolf Two is out for blood as well, but it’s Ed’s that she wants.

Ed winks, and Stede can’t help the bubbling sort of laugh that rises up in him. It’s accompanied by a similar flash of heat, something that tightens in his gut until he’s helpless to stop himself, pushing into Ed, slotting their legs together so they’re practically sharing the same bit of space.
“I think I see something now,” Stede tells him, unable to stop smiling. Tugged free of the rail, his hands find purchase instead in the tough leather of Ed’s top, fisting in the warmed material, accidentally stroking over some tough piece he must be wearing beneath. “Maybe if y—”
“If the two of you don’t fuck off,” Izzy says, “I’m going to run you through on my sword at the same time, and you’ll die together.”
“Romantic,” Ed replies without missing a beat. “What do you think, Stede?”

“Come here.” Ed puts his hand back behind Stede’s neck and pulls him close. “Listen, I know you said no sex, but… would you try it, just once, with me? I promise we’ll stop if it ever gets to be too much. Solemn vow.”
Stede stays silent for a moment. He thinks of Mary, not even meeting his eyes as they performed their marital duties. And he thinks of Ed, pulling back after their first kiss, gazing at him as if Stede were the most beautiful thing in the world.
“Alright,” he whispers.
*Stede doesn't like sex. At least, he thinks he doesn't, because he's never had sex with someone he's actually attracted to before. Ed very patiently teaches him that sex can actually be enjoyable. There is crying. Bon apetit.

“Ed— What are you doing?” Stede demands, bewildered, a new sort of heat flashing through him at the sight of him tugging his pants down. “Wh—”
“You said we could go swimming,” Ed reminds him. “On vacation.”
He kicks them off, leaving him in his stockings and silk underthings from the waist down, moving to tear his shirt apart next. It comes up and off over his head in an intoxicating sweep of leather, only a minor amount of wriggling required for him to work his way out.
Stede’s only able to— stare, for a beat, before Ed kicks at his shin. “Take your clothes off, love, ‘cause I’m throwing you in with or without them.”
Love, he says, and Stede’s fingers clench up into white-knuckled fists before he rushes to do as Ed’s instructed him to do, half-intoxicated with desire, half-terrified Ed will ruin his clothes with the saltwater.

It’s the total raging bullshit of this that sets Ed off. Stede shakes his head. He should have told him this long ago so he could realize how silly it sounds. He needed Ed to simplify it for him. He holds Ed’s face gently, “No… I didn’t really… I was just scared and being foolish. I’m sorry.”
Ed closes his eyes, leaning into Stede's palm and shaking his head, “No. No, I’m sorry… I just thought we were taking things slow and… and I liked it.”

He returned with the book, tapping it on Ed’s leg as he reclaimed his seat in the chair. “I’ve always been rather partial to a sonnet, myself. Though they’ve often left me feeling somewhat melancholy.”
They’d often left him filled with longing, left him feeling empty, and strange, as if he were missing something vital to the human experience. He loved them, still. Pain was the price of beauty, after all.
Stede glanced up at Ed, smiling at the effortlessly lovely picture he made, backlit by a dozen candles. “Although, I wonder, now, if it might be different.”
Ed shifted on the arm of the chair, throwing his own arm over Stede’s shoulders to peer at the book. “Different, how?”
Without thinking, Stede bumped his forehead against Ed’s shoulder, joyful honesty bubbling out of him like seafoam. “Well, with you, of course. Everything is different with you.”
A deep, thoughtful line appeared between Ed’s brows as he examined Stede’s face. “Is it?”
