Summary
A year after the events of Season 5, Mike publishes his first book titled “He Loved Me”. Will goes to a small bookshop in New York to watch his friend’s band play a show, and stumbles across the book in a discount bin. The discounted copy has a severely damaged cover. He doesn’t see who wrote it until he finishes the book.
Inside the book, Mike writes about two friends. To an outsider, it would appear to be a heartwarming story focused on an inseparable pair who grow up together, later admitting their romantic love for one another. It is a tale that emphasizes the importance of making the hard choice, and dealing with the fallout rather than taking the easy way out.

Mike was a jerk in Lenora, he knew that— but he apologized, and he thought everything would go back to normal. That Will would still be his best friend, that El would still be his girlfriend, and things could go back to the way they'd been before California.
They're back in Hawkins, but Eleven broke up with him, and Will avoids Mike like the plague. And the worst part? Will is shutting Mike out while living in his basement.
Mike Wheeler doesn't know what else to apologize for, but there must be something to make Will avoid him like this— but truth be told, he's been too afraid to find out what exactly that something is.
Or: Mike doesn't realize just how hurtful what he said back in Lenora really was, and he's got a lot to work through if he wants his best friend back.

“I finally told El I love her.”
Will coughed, bringing the thermos away from his lips. “That’s—that’s great, Mike.”
“Yeah,” Mike nodded, “It felt right.”
Will hummed, busying himself with the backpack. “Great,” he replied softly. “I’m glad you’re happy, Mike.”
“I think she was my Tammy.”

At first, Mike was unsure how to approach him when he got like this. But they’ve been living together for months now, never further than five feet apart in their dorm beds, so Mike’s learned what works and what doesn’t.
It works when he wakes Will like this, with gentle hands and words, telling him he’s safe. It works when he climbs into Will’s warm bed, turning him on his side and curling up against his back, an arm over his waist and his cheek pressed against his shoulder. They lie together like that until Will’s hiccupping gasps soften into steady breaths, until Mike feels him go limp in his arms and he knows he’s fallen back asleep. It always works.
or: Will has nightmares and Mike is the only one who can console him. Not even Will's boyfriend can. Mike takes great pride in this fact.

“Look,” Will says again, showing Mike the table he crafted to go in Castle Byers.
“Oh! Cool,” Mike answers, although Will can tell his mind is elsewhere.
“You alr—"
"Who is "M"?" Mike suddenly asks, interrupting him.
Will’s eyebrows shoot up, confusion written all over his face. "Huh?"
Turning around, he realizes that Mike is holding something. A piece of wood in an odd shape. He steps a little closer, squinting his eyes. The capitalized M + W, bluntly carved in the wood, is impossible to miss.
And Will's heart drops to his stomach. Because he knows that piece of wood. Of course he knows it, he goddamn carved that himself years ago.
"Uh, I—," Will says.
Or, the fic where Will and Mike rebuild Castle Byers and Mike figures something out (but it takes him a while, obviously.)

After California, the Byers move into the Wheeler’s house, and nothing feels the same.
The nights are too quiet. The basement is too cold. Will’s dreams are still full of fog and monsters, and the Upside Down never feels as far away as it should. When sleep becomes impossible, he reaches for the walkie-talkie out of habit, hoping for a voice that might ground him.
He does not expect it to be Mike’s.
Two months of silence sit heavy between them, filled with things they never said and questions they are afraid to ask. Mike is tired in a way Will does not know how to fix. Eleven is gone in ways that hurt more than distance. And somewhere between whispered conversations, shared blankets, and nights that stretch too long, the lines begin to blur.
What starts as comfort turns into something quieter and more dangerous. Something warm that settles deep beneath the skin.
As rain pours down on empty roads and secrets finally surface, Will realizes that some feelings do not fade. They live in the body. In the blood. In the veins.
And no matter how fast he runs, Mike is always there.
