In 2009, certified loverboy Dan Howell crosses the country to spend Christmas with his boyfriend of two months and his family. He discovers that the Lester family handles the holidays differently than Dan's family does.
In 2025, Dan and Phil invite their families to spend Christmas in the house they built.

This is such good 1980s internalized homophobia angst, like I really really felt that. Young Dan comes across really clearly as kind of too young to be that scared, and very determined to live how he wants, with Phil showing how having gone down the gay road and living a more protected upbringing before can actually make you *more* scared.

(Set at some point post-Season 1. Shane and Ilya need to establish the start of their "friendship" in the public eye. Naturally, this becomes seeing how hard they can covertly flirt with each other. Naturally, that becomes sexual roleplaying as a version of themselves that didn't have an almost decade-long situationship.)
