Summary
On November 13th, 1983, at the exact moment the demogorgon was destroyed in Hawkins, Indiana, Ophelia Alice Winters wandered down the stairs of her wealthy grandparents' home in Indianapolis and woke the neighborhood with a blood-curdling scream. Only a few hours later, her parents' bodies wash ashore in the White River and her grandfather has her placed in Pennhurst Mental Hospital.
On November 5, 1984, the exact moment the Mothergate is sealed in Hawkins, Ophelia has a terrible seizure and finally manages to escape the facility that has kept her trapped and suffering visions beyond her comprehension.
Six months later, Leah Winters is released from Pennhurst and steps into Hawkins for the first time in twelve years. Almost instantly, she knows something has sensed her return.
