And then Arlong happened, and she had neither time nor energy to waste on soul-searching when she could pour it into money-making instead. You run, you steal, you haul your winnings back to your mother’s grave; if you have enough left in you by the end of the day to crawl into whichever bed you’re sleeping in this month, it’s a better day than most.

Sanji stares at him for a moment, suddenly aware of his deep frown, and he smoothes it away with a brush of his hand as he scoffs. “It’s not funny when you say it, Marimo.”
Zoro laughs. “Oh, but it is when you do?” he asks with a cocked eyebrow and Sanji grins at him, reaching out to shove at his shoulder, well aware that he knocks Zoro slightly off balance only because the swordsman lets him.
“Excuse you,” he retorts, dodging Zoro as he swipes out at him with a large hand, “but I’m fucking hilarious.”
Or, five times Zoro shows affection and the one time Sanji realises (and returns) it.

Sanji was just a kid when he met Zoro– the day he found both a refuge from his father's household and an unexpected friend. Then Zoro left, and that was it. Sanji had to survive alone because, even in his wildest dreams, he never would have expected Zoro to show up again, especially not like this; but now Zoro has, and the way Sanji's learned to live is about to change.
Or: Sanji's used to trading one prison for another, but he didn't expect to find hope in any of them.
