Summary
Eddie steps out of the car, right between the Methodist church and the Hawkins High School building. It's changed. A new building, new paint scheme, a freshly paved parking lot. They've remodeled, and dozed down the memories, good and bad, that clung to this place.
The cafeteria is gone, moved somewhere new, he supposes.
Eddie isn't sentimental for school. He hated school, the three tries he had at his senior year are enough to prove that. But he misses that time, all the same. He misses Hellfire Club. He misses playing music in Gareth's garage. He misses their weekly Tuesday gig at The Hideout.
He misses his unlikely, and tentative friendship with Steve Harrington, that grew into their love that followed.
He doesn't miss his hometown, except for when he does.

Hard winters weren’t uncommon.
Ranchers lost most of their crops because of sudden winter storms that couldn’t have been prepared for, animals died because there wasn’t enough to feed them and families, and money was tight for months.
It happened every few years, some years worse than others.
But everyone usually stuck together through it, helped when they could, gave what they could.
This was the worst winter Steve had seen in his 32 years of life.

Steve pulls away and looks at him, and Eddie looks back. His vision is still blurred, and he can feel the others’ eyes on them, but Steve doesn’t seem to care. He’s just gazing at Eddie, and his hair is longer than it’s supposed to be. It looks nice, but it’s different, because it’s been months, and Eddie doesn’t fucking remember any of it.

Summary
It’s strange, the way his mind so suddenly changed paths to focus on Steve rather than the pulsating anxiety, but it should be stranger. It’s as though this was some natural conclusion for him to come to, as though this was what his body was made for. Like there was a hole in the universe carved out specifically for Eddie to fit in, a role nice and easy for him to slip into, and all it was doing was waiting for him to find it.
With the peak of his panic attack behind him, a few lights in Eddie’s brain blink back on. Somewhere in the middle, somewhere he can’t reach without help, something tells him that this is big. That the way Steve is speaking to him, the effect it’s having on him, isn’t something he should ignore. And he doesn’t want to, is the thing. He wants to lean into it, wants to be wrapped up in its warm embrace where it’s secure and safe.
Or, the one where Eddie has an anxiety attack and learns a few things about himself.

“You’re gonna fuck up your shirt,” Eddie says, voice dipping. His attention’s fixed on Steve’s wound again. There’s the subtlest crease in his brow, something pained or held back. Steve watches him, frozen; he feels kind of useless again, which is absurd, because Eddie’s staring at him like he absolutely and obviously needs him.
Or— a part of him. Just a part. And it’d be easy to give to him.
“What if, um,” Eddie starts, still eyeing Steve’s hand. “What if we… help each other out, here?”

“Sure you’re not,” Eddie said in that shit-eating way of his. “You just want me to be a more responsible co-parent for Dustin.”
Steve couldn’t help but frown, hating that he could feel his ears turning red, wishing that Eddie would back up and that he could stop feeling so goddamn weird.
“We’re not - I’m not a parent, co or otherwise,” he said, frowning even harder.
Eddie made a face like Steve was tragic. “Oh, Steve… I thought you said you weren’t delusional.”

But Eddie was always wandering in places he shouldn’t be, looking to get out of his house.
“My parents don’t like each other very much. It’s better out here,” he’d told Steve by the lake.
Technically, Steve wasn’t supposed to be here alone, and he was sure Eddie wasn’t either, but it seemed like both of them had parents who had better things to do than try to wrangle their children.
But if they were asked, and they never were, they weren’t alone. They had each other.

And there he was. Just as in your face and over the top as ever.
Only he looked… different. He looked like fucking Bon Jovi. Jeans so ripped they may as well just be shorts and a crop top and hair pulled back into a bun with loose bits falling around his face. In some weird way, the jeans almost seemed more revealing than shorts. They weren’t, of course, Steve couldn’t see the backs of Eddie’s legs or his left knee or either calf, but there was so much open ripping around his thighs that almost seemed more… teasing.
“Holy shit, I can see your whole face.” Steve mumbled out, lips parted in genuine surprise, instantly reaching out to try to touch the bun at the crown of his head.
Eddie batted him away.
