Summary
"Don't let him die, Emery." It's Jack's voice, filtering into Robby's half-awareness. Something warm anchors him by one hand to the world.
A scoff. "As if I would." Then, softer, "I've got him, Jack."
"You better." The warmth encompassing his hand becomes intense for a moment with a press of lips, and then it slips away, and then everything slips away.
When he wakes, he's terrified.
After witnessing a violent attack during which he is also injured, Robby struggles with a paralyzing fear of what it means to get a second chance.

Summary
"Did Michael Robinavitch just look at Jack’s mouth? Was he reading that right? No, that couldn’t be, because they had a very specific type of friendship. Sure, lines had gotten a bit blurred since they started sleeping in the same bed, but that was just practicality. They were good for each other. Kept each other from walking off the roof, that sort of thing. But they always slept with pajamas, or at the very least boxers and t-shirts when it was too hot, there was always a line that neither of them had ever intended to cross. But now…"

Robby and Abbot have been in a queerplatonic relationship for some time now--not that either of them would describe it as such--when Robby gets in his head about it following a conversation with Dana. His subsequent turmoil comes at the worst possible time for Abbot.

Summary
There was another thing. Something other than anger that lurked in the shadows of Jack’s mind, but it had been there for years, so there was no sense trying to make it make sense now. There was a yawning chasm, so deep and dark he didn’t dare try to see the bottom. It had a gravity to it. It drew him forward. If he looked right at it, he’d fall straight in. So, instead, Jack looked away. He let the feeling fade back into the background where it always lay.
---
Jack finds Robby suffering from a dangerously high fever, and he doesn't have any feelings about it whatsover. He stays objective, always. He doesn't worry at all...

Summary
Robby used to think, sometimes, that Jack was a punishment.
Not a punishment in a cosmic sense of things; Robby doesn't believe in that kind of debt because he's not a Buddhist and certainly not a believer in divine retribution. But there's a weird logic to it that he can't shake off: every relationship Robby has ever had ended the same way. You're too distant, you're too closed off, you never let me in. He sees that now, in the harsh light of retrospect, and nods: Yeah. I’m difficult. But I am what I am, right?
And then comes Jack.
In this AU, Jack Abbott has never been in the army. He killed a man in his early 20s and spent 6 years in jail. Afterward, he became a nurse. Med school in mid-thirties, graduated at forty-two, residency at forty-six, attending at fifty. He still carries the baggage, though. Robby tries to suport him, but in all the honesty, it's blind leading the blind.

Summary
When Robby ambled in a little early for his shift, central was a hive of activity, Walsh calling back to Jack as she accompanied a gurney out of Trauma 2: "Learn from the master, soldier boy."
"When you find one, be sure to let me know, princess," he shot right back, but the note of fondness in his tone made Robby freeze. That wasn't their usual back-and-forth. That held warmth to it. An undercurrent of knowing. A joke shared between two people who'd seen each other naked. More than once.
Robby clocked Jack watching Walsh go—what the fuck—and then he went back into Trauma 2, debriefing with the team. It was the tiniest moment, nothing—
And yet Robby's whole understanding had just realigned. Jack and Walsh. What the fuck.

Summary
Five times Robby and Jack kiss for plausibly deniable, purely platonic, eminently explicable reasons; and one time it’s, perhaps, slightly more difficult to explain away.
Why Robby thought he could get away with simply going to a ball game with his good buddy is beyond him. He should have known there was some sort of cosmic power set against him; a constant portent of misfortune hanging on his brow, following his steps like a particularly prickly house cat, tripping his gait at every available turn. Murphy’s Law ought to be renamed, frankly. Robinavitch’s Law might have less of a ring to it but at the very least, it certainly rings true.
All this to say, when the Kiss Cam becomes unerringly trained upon the figures of Robby and Jack way out in the edge of the stands, he should be less surprised than he is.

Summary
He was waiting for Robby to emerge from the stairwell and begin his day with Jack’s ending, but he often found it best not to think of the man until he was standing a few feet away. It was more exciting when he went in blind; but moreover, it was the only way to live. Otherwise he’d do things like remember anything Robby ever made him feel.
One morning, Jack ruminates on taking the night shift.

Summary
Robby needed him, so Jack was here.
A sharp zing of guilt rushed through him, the kind reserved only for Jack. The kind that reminded him where they ended, but not where they began. Their beginning was too far away now, so many lives ago. And their ending was always looming near, always Robby’s fault.
Because even back then, when Robby hadn’t yet seen half of this world’s darkness, he still couldn’t keep him. Didn’t deserve to.
Now, with his hopes shattered, so broken and lost, how could he? Jack deserved so much more, so much better.
But Jack was here, because Robby needed him.

Summary
"Why would you need to be on PrEP?" Robby asked slowly, suddenly feeling like he was floating outside his body, watching this scene from a distance.
Jack looked at him obviously. "'Cause I'm planning on getting railed and it's the responsible thing to do," he said, like this should be no surprise at all rather than Jack coming out to him. At Robby's silence, Jack narrowed his eyes. "Got a problem with that?"
Robby blinked, slamming back into his body, aware of his elevated heart rate, the sweat prickling along his lower back and at the backs of his knees, making his dress slacks clammy. "Nope," he said, because he didn't. He didn't.
He just...hadn't known, that was all.
