Summary
For his first real glance at the city he’d have to call home from here on out, Columbia wasn’t all that impressive. Admittedly, in the dark, all Aaron could really see was the orangey glare of streetlamps illuminating the highway, reflecting off of other cars that sped past his window. The route took them over a long bridge, tall suspension poles stretching up into nothingness, and if Aaron pushed himself up on his hands far enough, he could just about see the reflection of glowing headlights on the dark river.
The second installment in Aaron's life story: moving to Columbia, meeting his brother, and trying to fit into the puzzle of the world.

It wasn't as depressing as it sounded, drinking alone. Plenty of bodies around to hide the fact.
They had been two of them, hovering at the edge of the dancefloor. Seth didn't recognise them, which might've been why he watched. They were both wearing entirely black, matching bullet belts and thick jackets. At first, it'd only been the one guy, leaning against the wall, eyes scanning the crowd like he was looking for somebody. His expression was blank, almost bored, but then he caught sight of a movement in the crowd, and a smile spread to his eyes. Another, taller man was walking toward him, drink in hand, and the shorter had greeted him with an arm wound around his neck.
And he kissed him.

andrew had been having a bad week. he got two detentions. he watched his twin brother shoot up behind a dumpster and carried him back to their foster home. at least this home didn't have any men in it. their foster mother, bee, and her wife anne, were both psychiatrists so andrew knew they were probably studying the twins. watching how andrew never took the meds his own psych had prescribed. it was the best foster home he had ever been in, both better and worse with aaron there.
aka the twins are fostered by bee but not everything is perfect

If Kevin Day was good at one thing, it was wanting something he couldn't have.
People thought he was dependent on alcohol, but really, his most dangerous vice was the thrill of the chase. It didn't matter if it was sports, academics, relationships; Kevin needed to be in pursuit. He loved the exhaustion that lived in his body when he ran drills into the ground. He loved taking lost causes and making them into pro Exy prospects. He loved reviewing dates and editing his papers mercilessly into the early hours of the morning. He loved pushing himself impossibly harder to become faster, stronger, sharper, then moving the goalposts once he got there.
It shouldn't have surprised him then, that in a world where teammates and fans all but threw themselves at him, that he found himself chasing after someone who didn't care about him at all.

Kevin was too busy surviving to have a chance to crash and burn. Between dating apps, liquor stores, bad haircuts, worse decisions, and therapy, he ends up in the even more dangerous position of being in love with Aaron Minyard.

She knows it is, because Wymack has the look on his face again. She’s not sure if he realizes it, but every time his attention is on Kevin Day, Wymack gets this sad, worried expression on his face, like he’s watching a puppy die. It’s quite pathetic, and it’s going to give him wrinkles. Kevin Day, as messed up as he may be, is an adult man - one who’s over six feet tall, at that - and Wymack still treats him like he’s a skittish rescue. Well, if Kevin is a rescue, he’s the worst variety of chihuahua. The kind that are always shaking and bite anyone that comes near them.
Her mother owned one. Allison hopes it’s keeled over and died.
