At least thirty years worth of derivative romcoms told Nicholas Wilde when Judy appeared around the van, dressed in shimmering dandelions, ears rolled into a suave bun, he’d reached the part of the movie where he realized she was beautiful all along. It was supposed to be the exact moment and would’ve been had Nick not already discovered that fairly consequential and relevant tidbit of information several weeks ago.
He was the Freddie Finch Jr. to Judy’s Rachel Neigh Hoof.
Alas, they were on Chapter 2. Romantic interests usually didn't figure it out until Chapter 3, at minimum.

Leo blinks as the words filter through his brain. “Wait, did you… steal Donnie’s wallet? Michael. I’m so proud.”
“Noooooo!” Mikey snickers, like a liar. “He just leaves stacks of bills around his lab sometimes! And Dad’s always telling him to clean up, yeah? I’m just doing my brotherly duty and lending a hand!”
Leo cackles, using his free hand to scrub the top of Mikey’s head in an adjusted noogie. “You are completely in the right and don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. Now, help me finish this so I don’t get a cramp, and we can be on our way, yeah?” Smooth as anything, he tears the donut in two, making sure to hold the half with more cream out towards his brother.
Mikey’s smile fades a bit, but bolsters a second later. And when he reaches out to take the offered half-donut, something anxious and fluttering in Leo’s chest settles.
Or: just because you love someone doesn’t mean you understand them.

“It has been a long time since a sick little turtle has called for me,” Splinter murmured, stroking Blue’s forehead around the bandages. “Normally you are all ready to fight each other to the death to monopolize Red’s attention.”
It was only partly a joke. Leonardo gazed up at him, eyes glassy. It was hard to gauge how much of their conversation was sticking the landing and how much was somersaulting straight over his sluggish head.
Then Leonardo said, “He hates me.”
“Pardon?” Splinter said stupidly.
His son blinked, and finally fat tears rolled down his cheeks, soaking into bandages on one side, unchecked on the other.
“He hates me,” Blue insisted. “He’s right. It was my fault.”
