Summary
Regulus Black has always believed the biggest challenge he'd ever face would be leaving Grimmauld Place. But now, faced with James Potter' determination to teach him how to swim. Regulus has realised that he has made a grave miscalculation. Forced to overcome his fear of the water and the past trauma that threatens to drown him, Regulus begins to see James in a new light—not just as a friend, but as someone who truly cares for him.
"I have, once before," Regulus admits.
"Have what?" James stares in mild confusion as though he's missed something important.
"Fallen in," Regulus says it so casually, as if he's discussing the weather, raising to sit up more straight, his knees still tucked to his chest.
When Regulus meets James' gaze, he watches the smile fall from the teen's face; it slides as though it were ice cream dripping down a cone on a hot day. The look on James' face makes his chest ache in an unfamiliar way.
Or: Regulus is terrified of water. James, not knowing this, tries to teach him how to swim. A scare during a swimming lesson triggers his past trauma, and James tries to navigate the tricky situation.

Summary
Regulus accepted his lot in life a long time ago. Long before his father got sick. Long before his brother left. Long before his mother got sick of his father’s sickness.
It might have been as early as before he could walk, or even talk. Maybe, even in the fleshy shelter of his mother’s womb, he knew he was fated to a life lived for other people. A life without sunshine and holidays, without jazz music, rock music, dessert, pets, romance.
It’s not as if he didn’t want those things. Of course he did. He wanted those things like any other boy growing up in England in the 1960s and 70s. Sex and drugs and cigarettes; he wanted them. He just wasn’t allowed those things. Even when his mother couldn’t stop him because he was old enough to go out and take them, he wasn’t allowed those things.
That was before Remus, and everything that came after.
But let’s not get ahead of ourselves.

“It’s dangerous out here at night,” Remus wet his lips, suddenly aware of how dry they were, “and we’re quite far from the nearest town.”
The man in front of him continued to gaze up at him, eyes twinkling with a dangerous look, seeming to dare him to ask risky questions, to probe and let curiosity kill the cat. “What’s your name?” he asked, feigning ignorance to Remus’ concern.
“Remus.” He answered without a second thought to who he was telling this to, something about the other man made him want to lay himself out bare, secret’s spilling out into the night air, all the good and the ugly. Something about the other man was dangerous but Remus felt the blood in his veins ignite at the thought.
“Remus,” the man with eyes like the moon whispered, “I’m Sirius.”

“Why don’t you have pants on?” Regulus asks flatly. “It’s fucking cold out here, where are your pants?”
James snorts. “I’m wearing pants,” he emphasizes, slightly lifting his hoodie to show his shorts, which in Regulus’ defense were quite short. “And it’s not that cold. I’m wearing a sweatshirt and Remus is almost here, I’ll be fine,” he says, waving Regulus off.
Regulus’ eyes narrow into slits. “You’re going to get yourself sick,” he mutters under his breath.
“What? Are you upset that I’m wearing little shorts? Does it bother you? I didn’t peg you for a prude, Regulus,” James teases, raising his eyebrows.
A deep flush spreads across Regulus’ cheeks and James can see his jaw flexing in irritation. It shouldn’t be as hot as it is to James, but he feels a fire in his belly at the sight. A part of him wonders what would happen if he just kept pushing, but he doesn’t want Regulus to run him over with his car today.
