Missing Chris is less of an emotion these days and more of a physical entity. He’s sure everyone can see that he’s slowly hollowing himself out, that he can’t do much of anything else.
But when Jee laughs at him trying to get his tongue to touch his nose, and Mara loops one of her arms through his to keep him from tossing the rest of his cup in the garbage, Eddie feels solid again.
Maybe he likes yellow birthday cake ice cream after all.

Buck didn’t need all of his coworkers to look at him in alarm; he was pretty sure he’d gone deadly pale. His daughter knew four things about him, and one of them was his old tinder profile handle. He felt a little like he was going to die.
“She’s got your eyes,” Eddie commented, unhelpfully.

In his many years of taking on jobs for too-little pay, there’s one assignment he’s never worked. The other workers call it the “preschool brigade,” the FEDRA-school kids sent out into the field for what they call “work experience” to get them used to the real world. Really, it’s a behavioral tool, he knows, an example of “better act right or you’ll end up like these poor fuckers when you’re grown.”
He's deliberately never worked on one, uninterested in being put in charge of a kid doing a dangerous job they shouldn’t be. The kids that get sent on the preschool brigade are the ones FEDRA doesn’t necessarily care about getting back, after all, and there are things even adults shouldn’t be doing, not as untrained as most of them are.
And then comes the day one of the FEDRA guards assigned to his work detail that leads over a sullen-looking girl, who kicks rocks the entire way.

Harvey was a little bit too satisfied there, like the fate of his entire weekend rested in the balance, which definitely supported Mike's hypothesis. He supposed it was actually less of a hypothesis and more of a theory at that point. Harvey turned over, sliding his arm under his pillow and rearranging the covers, and Mike figured it was safe to let his own brain turn off and fall asleep.

He narrows his eyes slightly, suspecting a trap. He’s wanted to leave since the very start, but this is the first time a Firefly has mentioned it, let alone the Queen Firefly herself.
“And what might that be?” He drawls with a deliberate air of unconcern, even as he registers potential ambush points in the room.
Marlene takes a breath before she looks him in the eye.
“That her immunity isn’t because her mother got bitten when she was giving birth to her.” The weight of Marlene’s words tells him this feels like a confession to her, but he can’t help but scoff.
“So what?” He asks. “How’d she get immune then? Put something in her mouth when she was a baby that she shouldn’t have?” He smiles slightly, a mean, hard thing, still grinding a particular ax on the subject and eager to take a swing. “Not that you would know that, of course.”

Sarah’s been a scamperer since she was little. The very first time Joel took her to a play place at a mall, he looked away for two seconds to help Julia fold down the stroller and then looked back to find their 3 year old inexplicably on top of a giant padded cheese sculpture.
Just in time to watch her fall off.
He’d been across the play place faster than he knew he could move, and when he’d made it to her, Sarah had still been flat on her back, blinking up at him like she couldn’t understand what just happened to her.
And then she’d pushed herself up with her little kid gracelessness, giggling and already trying to climb back up, and he’d had a horrible suspicion about what the decades ahead of him were going to look like.

Feeling a little sick when he does so, he does get Tess to ask a few gentle questions on the horrible chance that the secret is something she wouldn’t want to tell her dad, something she might find easier telling a woman, but Tess reports back that she didn’t get the sense it was anything ‘like that,’ a small comfort against the way his daughter still wakes up with nightmares more often than not.

The ends of her sweatshirt are grasped in her fists, wrapped around her hands. He half expects her to pull the hood up, tie the strings over her face, and completely tuck herself away. It makes him think of the other night with that nasty motel bedspread pulled right up beneath her chin, asking about locks on the door. It makes him think of a scared kid.
“What difference does it make?” Ellie mumbles out while avoiding his gaze. “I’m out of there now.” She turns a steely gaze towards him. “And I’m not going back.”
“Wasn’t planning on makin’ ya,” Joel whispers in the late night air. The stars are coming out. If it’s a clear enough night, maybe he can point out Mars to her.

Her expression twitched with what was surely the question of why but she shook her head dismissively and instead said, “I’m the only immune person they’ve found. They need to study me.”
“So,” he said with repeated emphasis. “You’re their lab rat.”

She blinks, more than slightly startled, her struggle ceasing for a moment under the force of her bewilderment. In her defense, she’s still being held by a hand that feels like it could snap her wrist like a twig just by squeezing too hard, so she thinks she has a right to be a little confused.
Also the words make no goddamn sense.
“What?” She asks blankly, giving another testing tug against the hold. No dice. His grip doesn’t go tighter, but neither is he anywhere close to letting go.
“You’re out here doing magic and shit so you can steal from the crowd, right? Do some magic if you want the money.”
She gives him an incredulous look.
“Dude, I just tried to,” she’s suddenly aware that they are in public and that she and Riley will likely need this section of the park in the future, “rob you,” she says in a low hiss. “And now what? You want a fucking show?”
“You want the money? You ain’t stealing it from me. Do a trick and earn it, fair and square.”

“I get why you wanna go out,” he says, sitting back. Apparently they’ll be having this little chat entirely in the hallway. “I’m not going to let you, but I get why you want to.”
She bites the inside of her cheek, thoughtful.
“You promise you’re not mad?” She asks. It’s not the first time he’s been asked this question. He’s pretty sure it won’t be the last.
“Promise,” he tells her. “Already forgotten.”
She looks at him then, a studying sort of look, and then she smiles.
“That’s just because you’re getting senile,” she says, like the little shit she is.
Perhaps he should reconsider letting her off the hook so easily.
