Summary
The broken nose and purple-yellow bruises had been one thing—he’d long since grown used to the crooked way the bridge now bent, and the exhausted circles under his eyes would last long after the bruises overtop of them healed. Riko had pulled his hair out over the years, but never in such obvious patches.
It had been one of, if not the only part of himself, he’d been able to hold onto in West Virginia. Not even his heart had belonged to him, in the end.
But his head isn’t burning now. He isn’t in pain. Loud laughter and gentle hands surround him, kindness and care pushing into the very core of him from every angle.
“Hey,” Cat says, her voice soft and gentle, pulling him out of his head like a slow-rising tide. He looks at her, at the equally soft smile on her face where she hovers over him, the light over their heads bouncing off her hair like a halo. She bends to press a kiss to the center of his forehead. “No bad thoughts, yeah? Be kind to yourself today.”
Jeremy’s thumb runs across his knuckles again, and Laila bends her head closer to Cat’s hands to watch her work.
