“It’s insane. Everything about it makes perfect sense and none at all. I keep trying to find the words but the only thing coming to my mind is just ‘what the fuck’ on repeat?”
“The more I find out about Edgar Allen, the angrier I get,” Rhemann confesses. “I’m just relieved that Neil dragged him here when he did.”
“Jean’s not,” Jeremy says immediately. “He has creatively threatened his death multiple times.”

He can hear Eric’s laughter from where he sits with one knee against his chest, watching with dark eyes Jean will never forget. He can feel Justin’s hands on him, a bruising grip on his shoulder pushing until Jean’s on his knees. In a blink, he’s sixteen and can’t remember how to say ‘no’ or ‘stop’ in English as Justin unbuttons his pants. Jean can feel his mouth forming around the words, though he’s unsure of whether it’s real or a memory when no sound comes out.

The flood of guilt from making this situation about himself is halted in his brain by Jean’s hands around his wrists, the Exy-calloused fingers raising his hands until they rest on the top of Jean’s head, distracting him completely from his guilty conscience.

Zane Reacher kills himself on a seemingly unassuming day in October, but not before ruining Jean’s life one final time.
The timing is calculated, and if there was any doubt how deep Zane’s hatred of Jean runs, it cannot be denied any longer. Despite their season-long suspension, the Ravens have belligerently petitioned their way into a handful of “friendly” televised scrimmages with other teams. The NCAA has assured everyone that what they have observed during practices at Edgar Allen shows a remarkable culture change, and these scrimmages are an attempt to avoid what had happened with the Foxes in August next season.
Given their reputation for clean play and no tolerance of violence, the only obvious choice for a first trial of this experiment had been USC.
