“Me too,” Naim whispered back immediately, as if he had been keeping the words in his mouth for hours. “It’s all I’ve wanted for weeks.”
“I wanna play fight,” Ryan whispered next.

For the rest of the afternoon he turns the scene over and over in his head. It shouldn’t bother him. It was a 20 second interaction in his 9 hour workday. He’s never going to see her again. Maybe it would bother him less if she didn’t wear the same shade of lipstick as his mother, or if her stupid outfit wasn’t the same color as his grandma's dining room curtains, or if kind smiles from older women didn’t strike a raw cord of longing in his chest.
Maybe if not for the cruel reminder that God doesn’t love him. Maybe if not for the fact that he still cares about receiving God’s love.
Loving Naim is a sin that strangers feel Ryan should repent for. Ryan seeks comfort the only way he knows how.

“Family? Family doesn’t do what you did.” His vision is hazy, he tries to blink the moisture away. “You have no idea what the thing did to us… wanted to do to us. What it tried to do to me, like, multiple times,” Naim says. Sometimes, he can still feel phantom hands pulling at his belt, turning him over, smashing his face into walls, clawing at his hips. Fingers so deep in his throat they scratched his esophagus until he vomited blood. He sniffles. “Fucked up shit, Mum. So much of it.”
She reaches out to grab his hand. Naim doesn’t pull away. Tears fall for real now, hot and sticky, rolling down both his cheeks. “Mom, how could you do that to me?”
It’s Christmas eve. Naim’s present to his mother will be their first face to face conversation in almost five years.

Ryan breaks out into a grin, arm pulling Naim flush against him and replacing his thumb with his lips. Humming into the kiss, Naim draws his arms free and winds them around Ryan's neck.
As the kisses drift from his mouth to his neck, Naim bares the skin for Ryan to map out, eyes peeling open and staring at the sticks on the floor again.

Naim had been up and down all night long having to pee every hour on the hour. That combined with insomnia made for a very fun time.
It also gave him plenty of time to work on his mural that he was sketching on Daisy's wall of her nursery. It was a smaller sized room so there wasn't a lot of space to work with but Naim was just grateful to have a space that could be just for their pup.
