canon-compliant / gap-filler. pov alternating. this is soooooo canon!!! their actions, dialogues, and the plot are so well-written and realistic. i especially love that they struggle to talk about their past but they try to. the heart-to-heart mickey has with sandy was sweet and heart-aching. the flashback to their first sleep-over was also bittersweet. really enjoyed reading this!!

Charlotte fixes her entire attention upon Reynolds. “The next portion of our discussion is to remain between us, you understand?" she says. "I have decided that I will find Brimsley a wife.”
Reynolds drops the notebook. His face goes white; he scrambles to retrieve it and returns to his posture with his limbs locked in place, his jaw tight, his breathing rapid.
Charlotte did not even know he was capable of such emotion.
OR
Charlotte decides Brimsley is lonely and needs a wife. Who better to ask for help than his close friend, Reynolds?
For some reason, this does not go entirely as planned.

Summary
Ilya’s hand wraps around his bare wrist and squeezes. Shane barely stops himself from collapsing to his knees.
The pressure lights up every receptor of his touch-starved nervous system, wrenching a small, pained noise from the back of his throat. Every muted sensation comes flooding back so intensely that it almost hurts. He needs Ilya to hold him down until there’s nothing inside him but quiet. He wants to sink into him and disappear.
It takes Shane an entire beat to remember where they are. Fighting against the fog in his mind, he manages to drag his gaze up to meet Ilya’s.
There’s a slow-dawning horror and understanding on Ilya’s face.

canon-divergent. pov ennis. i’m making this cannon. this has got to be cannon. their dynamics, ennis’ growth and acceptance, and their future together is so well written.
“I don’t,” Ennis finally snapped. “Hides your lip.”
Jack’s mouth dropped open. Ennis felt so foolish he could die right here on the spot. Except he was driving, and Jack was already injured, so he’d have to stay alive until they got back to the house.
“Well,” Jack said. “Never knew you cared about seeing my lip.”
Ennis was pretty sure his whole body was bright red by now. “Got that mole,” he mumbled, keeping his focus on the road in front of him.

canon-divergent (but in the best way). pov mickey and ian. this is just amazing. i also feel like the traumas mickey endured after prison and mexico are not addressed in the series or fanfics enough, and this is a great take on how mickey suffered in mexico and the aftermath of it. and the best part is that ian and mickey figure it out through communication and proper help. loooved this!!
“He hit you?”
Mickey stares at the cracked tiles across the narrow alley. Ian’s voice is composed, quiet. Mickey’s not sure if he’s asking it or saying it.
He glances at Ian, not letting his eyes look above Ian’s waist. His hands are shaking. Maybe it’s Mickey who’s shaking, though.
“It’s not- I mean,” he tries.
Breathes in. Breathes out.
“It’s not like I can’t take a hit or whatever,” he starts again, defending himself. “Or like I couldn’t hit back, or- or leave, or- I don’t know. I didn’t want to.”
Ian doesn’t say anything right away, and when he does, he only asks why.
“Why what?”
“Why didn’t you want to?”
He looks at Ian, finally. “Things just sucked, okay? And I wanted something, and I was tired of fighting, or fighting back, or fighting for something, all right? So I just – let him.” -

“Will you? Wait?”
Inmates around him are standing up, and the guards are waiting for them to leave, and Ian’s not looking at him.
“Fucking lie if you have to, man. Eight years is a long time.”
He can’t really look at Ian anymore, either, and when Ian lets out a quiet yeah, Mick, I’ll wait into the ground, Mickey stops breathing.
He watches Ian leave, the blood that used to fuel Mickey’s heart now dripping down Ian’s hands.

canon-compliant. a real good gap-filler from mickey’s pov. it is so valid that mickey will not be able to easily trust ian after the border (there should be more fanfics around this), and the struggles in prison together were very well written!!
“Mickey, do you trust me?”
And Mickey really wants to say he does, but he can’t. He says I love you instead, and hopes Ian will let it go for now, but of course he doesn’t, and when he repeats the question, Mickey looks away from him.
“I don’t know.”
They sit in silence for a long time, and that’s that. -

You don’t want to break him. Not ever again. But you also can’t be the man he thinks you are if he doesn’t know everything. If you don’t tear the mask you’ve been wearing for years now completely off and show him what’s underneath. Its what you were trying to explain to him that night outside Byron’s when you insanely thought promise rings were going to make up for years of taking him for granted. How can he really want to be with you, love you when there is still so much, he doesn’t know?

post-canon. pov ian (second-person). i don’t usually like second-person pov but man this cuts deep. it hurt to know that mickey kind of gave up wanting what he wants because he can’t not love ian. loving ian must have been a hell of trauma for mickey.
“I get some of that shit you couldn’t help, but it still took something from me. And I still tried to be with you. I still tried to make you see how much I loved you. How much loving you changed me.”
“Love you too.” He says it so simply, so quickly. Without doubt. Without a pause. He looks down at you. “You’re slipping.”
