The Nuzlocke curse is rare, but more common then would be suspected for something that seemingly no one has heard of. And in a society where so much is tied to battles and to Pokemon, having your life tied to those battles can make life very difficult indeed when you can't explain to anyone what's going on.
When Brendan finds out that he's cursed, a day into his Pokemon journey, he decides that only way to deal with it is to become the best so he never loses again. Serena conversely quits fighting all together even as it means giving up on the one thing she's vowed to achieve.
And in the background of this is the question of what caused this curse and why they cannot speak its name and be heard.
