Summary
“Buck!” Eddie was already moving.
Oxygen tank forgotten at Bobby’s feet, turnout coat already halfway off because he needed the range of motion to check on Buck. The world tunneled—sirens, voices, the puff of dust off every bootfall—down to one point: Buck’s face up close, eyes too bright, lashes caked with grit. “Hey. Hey, look at me.”
Buck tried.
He blinked slow, mouth parted, a smear of soot curving up his cheekbone. His lips were almost colorless under the dust.
“Eddie,” he managed, voice frayed into a rasp. “M’good.”
“Yeah? Prove it.”
Eddie’s palm found the back of Buck’s turnout, guided him sideways to the tailboard of the engine. “Sit down.”_____________
Buck's caught right in the middle of a structural collapse and when he stumbles out, well, Eddie has to make sure he's actually okay.
This is, like 4.5k words of Eddie checking over Buck, sorry! -

“Holy shit, Eddie. You weren’t kidding. You have a hot husband,” is the first thing Greta says 30 seconds into Eddie pretending he’s not freaking the fuck out about pretending Buck is his husband at his barber’s lesbian wedding.

“I am taking it easy,” Buck argues, unimpressed. “I’m literally in bed.”
“And I’m expecting you to stay there,” Eddie warns, pointing a cautionary finger.
“Only if you're joining me,” Buck bargains, impatiently patting the mattress next to him.
“I've heard that skin-to-skin contact is really good for the brain, makes it release all the feel good chemicals and regulates stress and stuff.”Eddie narrows his eyes, considering. “Sounds like an excuse to get me shirtless.”

Hen stared after Buck before her worry drifted over to Eddie without ever looking away from the bedroom.
“He’s not talking?” She asked even though the answer was right there in her face. In all of their faces.
Eddie’s heart kicked against his ribs as he shook his head. “No. Not much anyway. Not if he doesn’t have to.”
Hen’s expression went tight as she finally looked at him. “What do you mean not if he doesn’t have to?”

Summary
“Whose place did you go back to?” Eddie murmurs.
“Mine.” Buck coughs, cheeks burning, with a painful and sudden awareness of the fact that he's just admitted to fucking his ex in Eddie's bedroom. “Well, yours, but–um, it was mine. At the time.”
Eddie’s eyes glint. Buck has rarely seen him make a face like that before. It's almost disorienting—a flash of lightning, there and gone, and Buck feels like he’s standing on another precipice. Of what, he doesn’t know. “Do you still… have feelings for him?”
“God, no.” Buck shakes his head with enough force to snap his neck. “Hell-fucking-no. We were so wasted. Also," he grimaces, "the morning after, he said something, and I got pissed, and then I said something. Pretty mean, actually. End of story.”
“Is it?” Eddie’s brow lifts, prying, and a stripe of heat plummets from Buck’s chest, straight through his gut. “What aren’t you telling me?” His tone isn’t cold anymore, just cautious, even gentle, and Buck can feel himself folding against his better judgement, like paper to a flame.

Or: Eddie jumps off of bridges so Buck doesn’t. Little does he know, he takes Buck’s heart with him every time.

“That’s not—” Eddie starts, but cuts himself off as he snaps his mouth shut. “It’s different, Buck.”
“How?” Buck asks, cheeks a heady pink. He steps into Eddie’s space, the anger nearly evaporating into something more quiet and devastating. “How is it different?”
And this. This is what breaks him.
“Because,” Eddie nearly yells, “you were able to save me from the line of fire, but I couldn’t pull you up the ladder!”

Summary
Eddie's head snapped up. One of the SWAT officers was pointing at a portable monitor set up near the command vehicle—a live feed from the news broadcast still streaming from inside the school. The camera was shaky, the angle awkward, but it showed a hallway.
And there—*there*—was Buck.
Eddie's breath caught in his throat. Buck was in the middle of the corridor, and he was fighting. Not running, not hiding—*fighting*. Hand-to-hand combat with one of the shooters, brutal and desperate. Buck's face was streaked with blood, his shirt torn, but he was moving with the fierce determination of someone protecting something precious.
The camera zoomed in slightly, and Eddie could see it now—the way Buck had positioned himself. The storage closet door visible behind him. The way every move Buck made was calculated to keep the shooter away from that door, to use his body as a barrier.
"The boys," Eddie said, his voice hollow with realisation. "They're in that closet. That's where he hid them. He's—" Eddie's voice broke. "He's protecting them."
Or Buck is taking the boys to Christopher’s science Fayre when a school shooting starts. We see how Buck fights to keep his boys safe and how Eddie rushes to save them -

He couldn't remember the last time anyone touched him on purpose at all. Everyone kept a very safe distance from Buck. He wondered if they were scared he would sue them if they made a wrong move near him.

"I don't want your bullshit anymore, Tommy.”
“Well then you shouldn't have slept with me!”
“I told you it didn't change anything, and you fucking agreed!”
“Because I thought you needed time, you and me, we had feelings for each other, you asked me to move in with you!”
“Fucking hell, Tommy! I don't have to want to sleep with everyone I have feelings for, and I don't have to have feelings for everyone I sleep with!” he blurts out, realizing what he just did when Tommy’s face falls, and another collective gasp sounds through the backyard.
