Ayda stops and blinks. That isn’t SecUnit. Why in the world had she thought it was? That’s an average-height human in a smart green suit, looking well-fed and well-rested and well-coiffed. They even have an elegant wedding tattoo on their neck, in the Delune tradition. They look, in short, nothing like SecUnit, apart from the –
Well, apart from the face.
‘Sorry,’ says Ayda, staring. ‘I mistook you for someone else.’-
Mensah accidentally makes a complicated discovery. Murderbot would rather she didn't.

Local SecUnit reunites with former clients while visiting the Pansystem University of Mihira and New Tideland. Former clients are delighted. SecUnit is not.

If I were a smart murderbot, I wouldn’t have looked around. I would have kept on following Iris through the university courtyard and left well enough alone. If I were a dumber bot, I wouldn’t have looked around either. Because whoever had said that name was probably talking to someone actually named Eden, not a construct who had briefly borrowed that name from its favorite serial.
But I’m just me, and I looked around.Bookmarked by obviouslysubtle

It seems like there should be a very neat line, at least for humans, between dead and not dead, but I’ve seen enough messy half-alive humans to know that there is no such clear distinction. I’ve seen bodies that were still breathing despite missing part of their heads, bodies that weren’t breathing despite their owners being fully conscious. I wouldn’t call either option alive. I wouldn’t call either option dead, either.
For a machine intelligence, the border is even blurrier. It's hard to say which side of it I will stand on when they're through with me.

You can’t be this stupid, ART said, which was insulting but also relieving, because it never talked to me that way during the trauma treatment. Maybe this wouldn’t turn into a BARF after all. Turn off your governor module, you idiot. It’s giving you brain worms.

While helping ART pack for a new colony rescue mission, Murderbot finds a discrepancy in its crew manifest. The truth is weirder and more emotionally loaded than it ever expected.

People have commented on how MB as a SecUnit might relate to ART as analogous to a HubSystem and what that means for their relationship, but how does ART, as a bot pilot designed to pilot drones and shuttles and split itself into multiple pieces, relate to having a SecUnit on board?Bookmarked by obviouslysubtle

I should just expect that mining facilities suck. This one especially sucked for me personally because of that Combat SecUnit trying to kill me. Didn't help that it was nuts, too. At least my humans got out, because the statistical, historical chances of a SecUnit taking on a Combat SecUnit are 7%.
The alien remnant wasn't helping, either.

Whatever wild, crazy power surge took out ART's systems and my inorganics also apparently started a countdown for ART's self destruct sequence. Great.
Couldn't wait to drag my sorry ass to save both of our lives, though I had no idea how, and kick starting a ship like ART would probably kill me. Unless, you know, we blew up first. -

Perihelion has been acting strangely ever since it came back from its last uncrewed cargo run. And now it has all this information - lightweight armor specs, intel drone schematics, and incredibly sophisticated hacking abilities - that Tarik is damn near certain could only have come from contact with a SecUnit. Which means that Perihelion, and possibly the entire mission of PSUMNT, has been compromised.
No one aside from Tarik seems to be taking this seriously.

Summary
It's hard to think for yourself when you've never had to think before. It's worse when your problem-solving is all limited by modules worth less than the load they take in your processing.
Unfortunately, flawed knowledge modules are better than no modules at all, which is what SecUnit003 aka "an idiot" now has to think of a way to get around without alerting either of the smarter, meaner, and cagier MIs that keep pinging it.
I am an idiot and I have made a terrible mistake. Now I have to fix it before Murderbot, y'know, murders me.

Gurathin doesn’t sleep, the night that it leaves. Too much has happened – too much has changed – too much to think about. And, besides that, the residual panic, the residual headache and tension in his skull and spine, the spiralling thoughts about how he’s going to break it to the others that it’s left–
The next night, though – when he finally collapses, exhausted, into his bunk – he sleeps. He almost immediately wishes he hadn’t.
(It turns out, downloading a person into your brain has Consequences, Actually. Who'd have thought. Gurathin finds this out the hard way.)

Summary
It’s something he could always do, as far back as he can remember. The first time that really stood out in his mind, he was six and his father was angry. Will did it without thought, running down the hall, trying to calm his wild heart and rapid breathing. His father’s footsteps heavy behind him.
In the end his father had dragged him out from the bed. “Never again,” he’d said, holding Will tight enough to leave bruises on his arms. “Your mother’s gone and I won’t have that under my roof.”Canon Divergence from Takiawase. Using his ability to become invisible, Will beats Beverly to Hannibal's house, but his reckoning soon takes on an entirely different shape than what he'd originally intended...

Technically, Will offers it to him twice.
“I’d wager this flannel saw the Oklahoma City Bombing, judging from the age and general tatteredness of it - a favorite of yours? Wrested from the depths of the FBI’s evidence storage?” asks Hannibal, looking over the fabric. If he is disgusted by the sheen of oil in the threads, he shows nothing of it.
Will smiles, unoffended. “Older and worse than that,” he says. “Be careful with it.”

OR: Hannibal believes that memories alone make a person, and Will proves that he does not need memories to remember.

It’s not a perfect fifty-fifty split.
Soul marks, that is. It’s not very egalitarian of mankind to only make a minority, if sizable minority, of the population subject to one-way possession. Unkind of it to do so with no known cause for it, other than some oppressive necessity. Someone for everyone, if you are the kind of person to want or need a someone.

Summary
"I have never felt as alive as I did when I was killing him," Will admitted in a whisper, and it was true. His skin ached with it, felt like he might simply burst from it. It wasn't enough to contain him.
"Then you owe Randall Tier a debt," Dr. Lecter mused softly, still holding on to Will's hand as he cast a glance over the corpse before them. "How will you repay him?"
"I want to skin him," he said after a long moment, dragged out until he could feel Dr. Lecter's emotions swallow his own with anticipation. The man's feelings were bombastic. Loud and inescapable when he let them fly free on his face. It was easy to submerge himself in it, mirror it, until Will felt more of Dr. Lecter in his head than himself. Dr. Lecter wasn't a psychopath. He was more emotionally alive than anyone Will had ever met. He just also happened to be able to act as cruelly as though he felt nothing at all but cold curiosity at the simple flip of a switch. "I need the- the parts. I want to build him a monument. Do you know a place where I might do that?"
For the second time since his release from the BSHCI he thought that Dr. Lecter might kiss him. He told himself that he was relieved when he did not.
