Perhaps he senses her presence at the door, can hear the pounding heartbeat that sounds in her ears. The door opens and there he stands, leaning against the doorframe with a book and an empty bottle in his hands. His dark eyes take her in, heavy and smoldering, and the book drops from his hand.
“You came back.” His voice is gravelly, as if he hasn’t spoken in months, only opening his mouth to inhale smoke and liquor.
Effie shrugs helplessly. “I couldn’t help it.”
After the war, Effie Trinket returns to District 12, wrestling with what is left to give after everything she has taken from them.
