Summary
After his and Steve's future selves came, went, and issued warnings about both the Hydra infestation in SHIELD and a maniacal space warlord named Thanos bent on collecting the Infinity Stones, Tony had really thought that everything would work out fine.
Then, Steve goes to Washington, DC and watches on the news as Tony's Malibu house collapses into the Pacific.
That's just perfect.
(Alternatively: Steve and Tony were stolen from their time mid-battle with Thanos and dropped into the middle of the Battle of New York. This changes things. This is not the story of the Avengers Who Failed. This is the story of the Avengers they left behind).

Summary
In hindsight, Richie realized that it all came back to the deadlights.
If you start when he was thirteen years old, coke-bottle glasses and hate in his bones, yelling at Bill (his best friend, how had he forgotten, his best friend), swinging a baseball bat at a dumb clown, it ends with Beverly trapped in the deadlights, limp in the air.
Start when he was fourteen, taking a knife to a bridge and carving something that could never happen, could never be true, because it was motherfucking 1984 and God forbid anything that wasn’t white, conservative, and straight.
Seventeen, smoking weed in the bleachers at school and trying to forget the hate that curdled in his lungs, because he was wrong and he hated it.

“It’s the metal suit,” Thor informed Steve, his normally-booming voice tinny over the SHIELD comms. “What did Stark call it—Iron Man?”
“But he’s down here,” Steve protested as the Hulk roared in Stark’s face, startling him into waking with a shout. “How could—”
“It’s damaged,” Thor reported. “But it looks different. More advanced. And he—ah. He’s carrying you, Captain.”
“Please tell me nobody kissed me,” Stark breathed out, and then Stark’s voice suddenly came over the comms, but the man lying next to him hadn’t moved.
“Guys, come on, you’re killing me here. What is it, 2012? God, I hate time travel. First, I'm fighting Thanos. Now, I have to deal with my past self and Thor's bad haircut? Oh my God, Cap, yes I hacked their comms, they’re my comms.”
Steve nearly opened his mouth to protest that he hadn’t said anything when he realized that this replica of Tony Stark wasn’t speaking to him.

Summary
The first time that Tony got one of the kid’s voicemails, he almost called back in the middle of a Board of Directors’ meeting before realizing that, logically, that was not something he could do.
The suit’s AI, Karen, sent him a daily report of Peter’s comings-and-goings. Tony read them unfailingly for a month before FRIDAY oh-so-gently reminded him that he could, in fact, talk to a certain protege with a serious case of hero-worship. Or, as she put it, “Boss, Peter Parker is going to start to overload my systems if you don’t do something about these reports.”
Tony wasn’t ignoring him on purpose. The cursor just kept blinking, on and off, on a blank email to one Peter Parker. Tony managed to think of twenty-four variations of hey kid before deleting the draft and tearing into the Iron Spider armor with a newfound rigor.

Summary
Stark looked different than the last time Steve had seen him. His face was smeared with blood, drawn and pale, and he had a hole in his side. In hindsight, Steve thought it was then. Thought he caught a hint of metal across Stark’s shoulders, down his ribs, through the tattered remains of his undersuit. That was the first hint.
It took eight hints for him to realize. Hint one, hint two, hint three, hints four and five and six and seven. The long sleeves, the flashes of metal. The new arc reactor, the one that Steve thought he had caused (driving the shield deeper and deeper until that light flickered out and it was just Tony staring at him, terrified, trapped in a metal shell that was supposed to be his salvation). The realization that Tony Stark would do anything to protect the Earth, and that he would damn himself to keep it safe.

When Loki saw Thanos’ ship rise into view from where he stood beside Thor, all he felt was dread. He had no idea what would be coming.
Loki had fully expected to receive the same treatment that he had the first time he’d been on Thanos’s ship—Thanos ripping into his head and pulling his mind apart only to put it together again the wrong way, or cruelly defacing his body with burns and brands.
Yes, that was what he had expected. That wasn't what had happened. Somehow, he wished it was.
