Inherent kindness did not exist. Not as far as Derek was concerned. As the crown prince of the Empire of Quelen, people were never kind to him unless they wanted something.
People were either sycophantic damn near to the point of insulting, or as rude as possible while leaving room for plausible deniability. They hated or loved him for the crown, he was not a living being as far as they were concerned.

New Year's began with Avery waking up at his desk with his sleeves wet with tears and his computer stuck on a Minecraft error screen. Though he didn't understand why he was crying and couldn't remember what even happened the day prior, Avery decided to move on from that bizarre incident and live his everyday college life, hoping that one day he'd remember the incident so that he could move on. And that's exactly what he does...
Until his everyday life is horribly upended by the sudden intrusion of increasingly ridiculous incidents, which eventually collide into one horrifying truth that Avery can just barely accept.
OR: 5 times Eldritch Derek ruins Avery's life, and 1 time he doesn't.
