Eddie takes Jonathan’s chin in his hand and squishes his cheeks with his thumb and middle fingers, cooing at how warm his skin feels. He’s always had a thing for easily embarrassed boys.

“Only because your cooking is so wonderful, kitten.” Dustin leaned into Steve’s space and looked up at him with an expression on his face that Steve’s brain unhelpfully labeled as smitten.
Steve forgot what he’d been about to say, turning back to Robin with his face red and his mind blank. Whatever improvised game they’d been playing, each trying to outdo the other to come up with the most ridiculous pet names, it was pretty clear that Dustin had won.

He trails off, like Harrington’s supposed to know what he means by that, and Harrington sighs like he does and is completely put out by the question. He tilts his head back to eye the ceiling, like he’s considering it – whatever it is.
‟Go wash your hands before I change my mind,” he says, and Henderson makes a surprised noise before he turns and hurries out of the room faster than Eddie’s ever seen him move – unless you count that one time they were being chased by demobats and literally running for their lives.

“You’re kinda new,” Steve says, stuffing his mouth full and wiping his fingers off on his jeans before reaching out to pull the driver’s-side door closed.
Dustin rolls his eyes as Steve buckles his seatbelt, moving the bag out of reach when Steve looks like he’s gonna go for another handful of fries.

A shockwave sent Dustin sprawling to the ground, knocking his head hard and making it spin. When his vision clarified, he saw someone else also struggling to his knees. He was short, about Dustin's height, with close cropped curly brown hair, shot through here and there with grey. He looked oddly familiar but Dustin couldn't place where he knew him."Son of a bitch!" The man exclaimed, shaking his head. He looked up, staring Dustin right in the face with the exact same blue-grey eyes Dustin saw in the mirror every morning.

“You have to be more careful, Henderson,” Steve bites out as he ties off the gauze.
“I’m not trying to get hurt,” Dustin lies. Steve’s hands haven’t left Dustin’s arm, fingers wrapped hotly around his wrist and elbow.
Dustin drags his fingers from Steve’s thigh to his hip briefly before slipping up under his sweater. He runs his fingers over the gnarled knots of flesh of Steve’s scars. The ones he got fighting off the same bats that took Eddie. Dustin lets his eyes flutter closed and a breathy sigh escapes his throat. “Steve,” he sighs again.
Steve inhales sharply and before Dustin can open his eyes, Steve is pressing a burning kiss to Dustin who opens under him immediately.

In the aftermath of Vecna ripping open rifts to the Upside Down, Dustin has plenty of opportunities to get hurt, from the monsters that invade Hawkins to MPs who patrol the roads, to the bullies at school. Dustin starts seeking out the pain to distract himself from his grief and anger. Each time he gets hurt, Steve is there to offer him relief... So now, Dustin has another reason to get himself hurt, if only so Steve will touch him again.

The bad dreams about Steve begin to ease off the more that Dustin knows that he's here for him. Whenever he needs. Whenever he wants. Whenever he asks and often times even when he doesn't, because Steve doesn't explain how he knows when Dustin is struggling, he just calls or goes over or swings an arm around him to pull him into a hug.
Something changes after Christmas. There's a resurgence of Steve in Dustin's dreams but they aren't awful. They aren't nightmares about his death or close calls or anything. It's just them laughing together, or going on drives, or pulling each other into hugs that linger. A lot of Dustin coming into a room and Steve looking up and absolutely beaming at him once he sees who it is.
And then one night in early spring Steve wakes up gasping and sweat drenched from a dream where Dustin won't stop asking to be fucked until Steve finally gives in.

Dustin thinks this may help him with his final (and most important) hypothesis: if both things are true, then maybe he has a chance after all.But Dustin may have forgotten some crucial variables. Namely, Steve’s feelings and his own. Emotional fallout ensues.
A story that takes place in a canon divergent world where Vecna never targets Hawkins after the events of Season 3. Events occur in May of Dustin's freshman year. Dustin is 15 and Steve is 19
