It was no secret that Hughie wasn't quite cut out for his current line of work, but he wanted so desperately to make a difference; to avenge Robin somehow. He threw his entire life away for this. He would see it to the end even if that meant dying horrifically at the hands of a Supe.
He thought that was the worst that could happen to him while working with The Boys. Dying on the job. Homelander seemed intent to prove him wrong.

Summary
Hughie assumed that what he woke up with on the morning of Believe Expo was a cold, simple as that. He's 27, he's way too old to be presenting as anything other than a beta. Too bad, that he managed to catch Homelander's attention before he could use his brain and realize it was possible to present this late, just extremely rare. You'd have to be unlucky for it to happen this late in life.
You'd have to be Hughie levels of unlucky, so it turns out.
