After confronting Morgause's vision of his mother, Arthur rides for Camelot, intending to make his father pay for his hypocrisy. He falls short of luck, for the King has fallen back on the counsel of his faithful Witchfinder, Aredian, who is convinced that Arthur is not Arthur, the crown prince, but a changeling, bound to Morgause's will and let loose upon Camelot to usurp Uther of his crown.
As Arthur is dragged away to the dungeons, sentenced to a death by fire, Merlin must race against time to change the course of events which seem to spell out Arthur's demise. Time is scarce, however, and for all intents and purposes, it might be too late already.

Summary
Everybody lives, post-finale AU. Arthur/Merlin, Morgana/Gwen. Arthur reaches Avalon, and makes a choice that changes everything.
Morgana crests the hill, that last hill between her and the lake of Avalon, just in time to see Merlin cast off his boat from the shore, Arthur leaning against his side: bloodied, weak, alive. In a matter of seconds, the boat crosses the border between this world and the next and enters Avalon, traveling beyond Morgana’s reach.
Her shriek of rage flattens the woods around her for twenty feet in every direction.

possibly my favourite story like this ever. this is the only conclusion to gwen and morgana’s story that matters to me. the conversations between them are so cutting and so well-deserved. and when she kneels to gwen in the end - hand on heart. hand on my STUPID heart.

Summary
“So what brings you my way?” Gwaine asked. To anyone but Merlin, it might have been startling to hear the man sound so somber, but Merlin knew Gwaine could take life seriously when he wanted to. He played the fun-loving drunk as well as Merlin played the fool, but Gwaine had his demons as well. Maybe that was why Merlin came here instead of Ealdor or wherever Lancelot was at the moment.
Merlin forced himself to look up. “I guess I could just use a friend right now."
When Merlin is banished from Camelot after his magic is revealed, he struggles to believe he has worth outside of Arthur and their supposed destiny together. But Gwaine has always known Merlin deserved better.

perhaps the most unique and poignant of its kind: this story is a little heart-wrenching, wonky and strange and i love it to bits. it really land the punch of a Connection across time, that melancholy tug of destiny.
