[NON-FICTION FANWORK] Dungeon Meshi is full of vivid and complex world-building. When you take all the information in the manga as a whole, there are clear and consistent patterns in what real world cultures the author was inspired by, and how she arranges them on the Dungeon Meshi world map.
In this essay, I will catalog and explain every real world cultural reference I was able to identify in the manga, including character and location names, historical and mythological references, clothing, and of course food!
WARNING: This essay is full of spoilers for the entire Dungeon Meshi manga, all the extra materials, and the anime. Disturbing and violent moments that happen in the series are described, discussed and analyzed. The essay also discusses real-life world history and mythology, which contains sensitive subjects like war, death, slavery, abortion, child killing, sexual assault, incest, and bestiality. These topics are mentioned in an academic context, and not described. Please proceed with caution if this concerns you.

Summary
It all started when Kusuo accidentally sends Kaidou somewhere due to an undiscovered ability. Well, actually it started before that, when he sends his coffee jelly to that same place, but he doesn't like to think about that much. Someplace unknown Kusuo begrudgingly has to accept the help of familiar and not so familiar strange annoying people to get to and accustomed to this idiotic, dangerous existence, while still looking for that annoying troublemaker, Kaidou.

Edgar stared at his phone, trying to understand if he was still sleeping or if this was some kind of joke, either from Ranpo or from his own consciousness. He blinked a couple of times, speechless, then he buried his head in the pillow, trying to process what had just happened. He was still laying in his bed, even though the clock on his phone said it was nearly noon. Nothing strange actually, he was used to staying up late at night and catching up on sleep during the whole morning, often woken up by Karl or by a call from his dear rival. But, for sure, he wasn’t used to messages like these.

“You wanted to see me, Boss?” Chuuya asks.
Mori smiles. Oh no. “Oh, yes. Thank you for coming.” Chuuya can almost see the daggers Dazai is glaring at Mori. “As you can see, Dazai has had a couple of unfortunate accidents resulting in the temporary loss of use of his arms.”
Chuuya looks over at Dazai, who, sure enough, has a cast around each arm. The cast on his right arm ends above his elbow, completely encasing his hand, and is supported by a sling. The one on his left leaves his fingers exposed and lets him freely move his elbow, at least, but that isn’t a lot when your other arm is useless. Chuuya is getting a bad feeling about this.
Mori looks like the cat that ate the canary when Chuuya looks back at him. So much so that Chuuya is half tempted to look around for little yellow feathers. Mori continues, “Due to his condition, Dazai will need someone to look after him and help him do things in the meantime.”
“Mori…” Dazai growls. Chuuya can feel his lip curling in disgust. Maybe he should’ve just skipped work today.
“I’d like you to act as his caretaker, Chuuya.”
