    > He could feel it creeping up on him, slow, steady, inevitable. His body was buzzing under his skin, not with arousal, but with need. Need for softness. For warmth. For comfort.

    Summary

Millie gives him a sullen look out of the corner of her eye. Not unearned, but Vash only raises an eyebrow, prompting her to continue. After a while, she sticks her chin between her knees and tilts her face until about half of it has disappeared beneath her pyjama pants. Her fingers white knuckle, fisted in the fabric of her shirt.

“This is… something I should really talk about with Miss Meryl,” Millie admits quietly, “because she always seems to know what to say, but I—it felt really stupid. And I thought, if I approached Mr. Priest about it, I’d make him feel bad. I just, um… you have to promise you won’t hate me.”

Vash raises his eyebrows. “What could you possibly say to make me hate you?”

    “I… killed someone?” Millie winces.

    Summary

“...Oh, but Mr. Vash, if what you’d rather have is a quiet evening tonight after your bath, that’s okay. You are my family, but it’s whatever you feel like doing, since it is your birthday. Don’t feel like you have to celebrate it in any particular way.”

Millie’s sweet. The reality is, if any of them tried to “force” a celebration on him—not that they would—Vash would probably make a clean and quick getaway. He’s not above just splitting if the situation gets hairy… Even these days, in this life, where he’s trying to get a little bit better at staying. The consequences of getting overwhelmed are just too steep (for others and also for Vash himself) to risk it, these days.

Thinking about it, though, Vash isn’t sure how to answer Millie because he just doesn’t know what he wants. The bath, he’s pretty sure about. Vash is pretty hyperaware of his water usage, so he never takes baths, and will be happy to indulge tonight. His achy joints will be even happier. His specialty donut is also a given.

What Vash knows for sure that he wants, otherwise, isn’t something he can have.

    Summary

“You did say that I could do whatever I wanted.”

Well, yeah, Vash said that, but he was being hyperbolic. Realistically, he’d wait for Lila-Jane to be out of harm’s reach, get Dr. Emphasis to come in here, and jump him. The guy doesn’t look all that strong. Even with a headache, Vash is pretty sure he could body him. No point in saying that though. There’s a chance Dr. Emphasis already pieced as much together—hence the smug smile on his face—but even if he didn’t, if Vash is faced with the option…

“I’d rather you let her go,” Vash says quietly. “Whatever you want with me, I’m sure she has nothing to do with it.”

“Are you so sure?” Dr. Emphasis raises an eyebrow. “Nonetheless, you know now the choices that I’m offering you. I can make one guarantee to you right now, however. I’ll only keep you both here for a seven days—no longer than a week. I have no intention of killing either of you. I have seven tests I would like you both to indulge me by participating in… and then I’ll let you go. Does that sound agreeable?”

    Summary

Vash kicks off his shoes, because there isn’t much available space on the floor anyway, and delicately picks his way to the back of the room, where the light only barely reaches and he can surround himself with crates, folded clothing, boxes weakened by the sheer volume of items packed inside.

There, Vash sits cross legged. It’s not the most flexible posture for him to assume right now, sure, but there’s plenty within easy reach even from his position on the floor. He starts first with the clothing that are sorted within arm’s reach, making piles in front of himself. He tries not to linger on any of the articles he picks up—it’ll just hinder his progress—but it’s impossible not to, touching the shirts of kids who used to wrestle him to the ground, women he held through tears over their first breakups, the pants of an older gentleman who was waiting for his lover of years ago to finally come home.

Vash’s face is wet with tears by the time his little corner is touched with light again.

    Summary

Pancakes were easy to make. Pancakes were an old favorite, something that was just similar enough in ingredient list (flour; sugar; eggs; milk) to donuts that it was Vash’s God-given right to learn how to make ‘em. No leavening agent made them a faster throw-together dessert, but that didn’t mean they didn’t require patience and a skilled hand. One could easily fuck up pancakes as easily as one could, say, blow a giant hole in the moon. He’d made many-a burnt circle of ash in his time as a sometimes-useless baker and most of those weren’t even his fault. You try making a perfect pancake while in an active shootout. You try attending to that sensitive little bubble of dough while dodging your own customers rallying for your head on a sixty-billion double-dollar pike. Vash might’ve been a free man, now, but he was not taking any chances with something being made for someone as special as Milly Thompson.

    Summary

“Who told you you’re stupid?” Nick demands instantly; the reaction she’d predicted, when she ran over this conversation in her head. He’s sat up as well, lips pursed. “The hell you are.”

“Nobody told me,” Millie says with a sheepish laugh. She rubs the side of her neck, where the skin has begun to warm. “You don’t have to… I mean, I really don’t want either of you to be upset. It’s not like something someone said to me got under my skin. I just…”

It would be hard for anybody, wouldn’t it? Living in a house with these three. Vash and Meryl are geniuses, the once-in-a-lifetime kind. Vash knows things Millie hasn’t even begun to scratch the surface on, a math and history whiz, and Meryl’s so quick on her feet, so articulate. Nick’s a genius with people, subtle and sly; he can enter a room with crying children and have every kid either asleep or clinging to his leg by the time he’s ready to leave it. Millie ends up feeling lacklustre by comparison a lot of the time, and that’s fine, because at least she gets to be around them. But…

“Mm, I don’t know,” Millie finally says, and lets out a weak laugh.

    Summary

“Ummm, hello, sir! Party of one?”

…Mm? Vash isn’t usually greeted by a hostess at the majority of cafes he visits. That’s a bit formal for a coffee shop, he figures. But maybe the name cafe had been deceptive. Especially in bigger cities, Vash has encountered that before as well. As long as he can get himself some coffee, it won’t be an issue, so Vash opens his mouth to confirm that yes, he’s dining alone, when he makes eye contact with the worker and his throat abruptly goes very very dry.

The woman standing in front of him—

    Is—

Her eyes are big. That’s what Vash notices first. Big and brown and framed with long, fluffy eyelashes. Tan skin with a spattering of pale freckles that are only visible because she’s standing directly under a light. Glossy chestnut coloured hair that tumbles over her shoulders in waves, drawn out of her face with an olive green ribbon. And she’s wearing—

“Wait,” Vash says hoarsely, “wait, I—”

“Yes?” The woman—maid—in front of him giggles.

    ---

Vash, on the verge of passing out, stumbles his way into a maid cafe in search of caffeine.

    Summary

“Should I guess? Would it make you feel worse if I guessed?”

“I wouldn’t stop you from guessing,” Vash says. Meryl’s lower lip juts out, but she doesn’t complain again, merely continuing to squint at Vash’s face.

“...Are you unhappy about him knowing at all?” Meryl asks. “I guess you don’t really talk about yourself. When it comes to your brother and your past…” She trails off, but then gives a quick shake of her head. “You agreed to the broadcast, though, so I don’t—”

There, Meryl stops abruptly. Vash hadn’t actually had any corrections, so he’s not quite sure what Meryl is thinking, or why her eyes have widened. They’re almost panicked when they settle back on him again, a dramatic contrast from the glimmer of excitement that’d been shining in them before.

    “You didn’t agree,” Meryl says.

    ---

Meryl happens upon a past discomfort of Vash's, prompting a conversation about how he processes his anger, or the lack thereof.

    Summary

He sighs, and Meryl can’t see his expression, but she sees his shoulders start to tense. Unfortunately, there’s not a lot she can do to make this process more gentle, so she resolves to just work a little quicker and get it over with for him. “Sometimes people go out causing trouble and all they’re really looking for is an outlet, you know?”

Nicholas takes a step back and sits on the arm of the couch, a deep crease in his brow. Meryl’s seen that exact look on his face before after he’s taken in a huge mouthful of particularly rancid whiskey; it’s how he regards Vash now, working his lips like he’s not really sure what he wants to say about that.

It’s fine. Meryl has plenty to say for them both. “You could’ve taken all of those guys out without breaking a sweat.”

“Ah, maybe,” Vash says, voice thin. “I’ve been kind of out of practice though—”

“Your out of practice is still plenty,” Meryl snaps before he can finish. “And you still just let them hurt you.”

    ---

Vash comes back home after relying on his usual method for solving problems - namely, his body, which prompts some discussion between him and his partners about learning to live with people who care about you.

    Summary

The first person who’d started the trend was actually Miss Luida herself. When Meryl and Milly were interviewing her about the ongoing Noman recovery efforts, the topic of the Humanoid Typhoon had come up—and as smoothly as any other slimy, skilled politician constantly bathing in the public’s critical eye, Luida had hummed thoughtfully to herself, before lying straight through her teeth.

“Oh, Vash the Stampede?” Luida had said, never missing a beat. “Ahh. Yes. After everything, I heard he went bald from the stress. When do you suppose they’ll update his bounty poster?”

—And then she’d winked when Milly’s giggles made the camera move off of her face, and Meryl had smiled like she’d just found a nugget of pure gold in a pile of tomas shit.

    Summary

Another silence. Millie hears his footsteps retreating, coming to a stop when they’re a certain distance away, though like this, Millie has no way of telling. He does speak again after a pause, voice distinctly further away now, but still audible.

“What I want isn’t to speak with Vash the Stampede,” the man says. “I intend to kill him.”

    “You—”

“Quiet! You couldn’t understand,” he snaps. “That man—that monster—took everything from me—my home, my family… He would have blown me to bits if he’d had the opportunity! The least he can do is answer with his life, and yet he refuses any kind of justice! I won’t stand for it any longer!”

His home, his family… Millie swallows as realisation dawns. “You’re from July.”

    ---

A scary encounter with a stranger leads the gang to hit the road a little earlier than planned, but it turns out the man's vendetta is a little more personal than any of them are expecting -- and Millie is caught in the crossfire.

    Summary

The third man nudges Vash’s gun where it rests on his hip. “I figured you were gonna use that, I mean, they say you’re some kind of sharp shooter. But the way you were bumbling around I wasn’t sure you could even use it!”

Vash, rather casually, uses the heel of his palm to steer away the wandering fingers, then closes his own over the top of his gun. “Yeah, the thing’s kinda for show.” He offers a big smile—one of those loose, easy smiles, the kind Millie can tell he doesn’t really mean. (Not like the one that’d crinkled his nose this morning, lopsided and sweet, quiet and sincere.) “But hey, all’s well that ends well, right?”

“It ended well because Mr. Vash stepped in,” Millie interjects, unable to help herself. The largest man of the group jumps, turning to face her. Somehow he hadn’t heard her approach, even though Millie doesn’t consider herself to be particularly light footed. (To be fair, it’s a little loud in here, and he was engaged in conversation.) His eyes rake over Millie for a beat, then flicker away as his two companions size her up too.

    “Friend of yours, Vash?”

Seeing Vash be misunderstood hits a little too close to home for Millie as she is learning what makes him tick.

    Summary

"Can I ask where you're taking me?" she asks softly. "I know I found the place for the mochi ice cream, but you said it wouldn't be just that…"

"Well, of course not. Just dessert wouldn't be a proper night out. I wanted tonight to have all the trimmings." He puts on a goofy smile, just for her. "We're almost at the restaurant, so I'll let that speak for itself, but after—it'll be a light meal beforehand, so I thought maybe you wouldn't mind—would you like to go dancing with me?"

Following their getting to know each other better, Vash and Milly go on their promised night out for mochi and many other things besides. A followup to lend a friend a hand.

    Summary

Vash followed Meryl’s eyes to meet Nick’s, watching as they rolled in his head. “We’re cryptid chasers,” he admitted with little to no shame. “Ever heard of the Humanoid Typhoon?”

“Or Millions Knives,” Meryl pointed out. “We still don’t really know which one it is.”

“Tch. Same thing, probably,” Nick added.

No. Not the same thing. Not at all the same thing.

The Humanoid Typhoon – Vash – was one thing. But his brother? That was a whole different story.

Or, YouTuber cryptid hunters Meryl, Nick and Milly get a little help from the local librarian on their new hunt. Little do they know he's far closer to the story than they thought.
