Neither of them knew about the bad dream Bucky had woken up from. Neither of them realized it wasn’t just tiredness that was making him act…different. Neither of them noticed the empty look in his eyes. Not until it was too late.
Or, Bucky has a bad dream that triggers some old Hydra programming that no one knew about. When he wakes up, he’s in full Winter Soldier mode.

“Cool,” Clancy says, rolling over onto his back. The open mesh of the tent is just translucent enough to make out the beginnings of stars dotting the sky. “Maybe once we’re out of here, and like, married and stuff, then we’ll have a garden.”
The Torchbearer sits up. The sound of the swishy fabric rubbing against itself is almost too loud, so Clancy has to strain his ears to make it out when the Torchbearer says “what the fuck?”
Or; Clancy still has a lot to learn about life outside of Dema.

Summary
There was no life altering event causing a lapse of faith; just a slow and steady distance from Dema’s empty grace as if his bones were rejecting the idea that Clancy was someone worthy of having something to believe in. That he was somebody who deserved to hold faith in a structure that would absolve him of whatever he does wrong, over and over and over and over. And by the time he had been smeared for his third time, he knows he’s past the point of no return.
Ultimately, he thinks that’s why the Bandito rebellion doesn’t work much for him, either. There’s too much overlap between a torch and a vial; each holding a person on the other side that’s trying to offer a solace that you don’t want or deserve.

Summary
They'd been trying to catch, or even find Joseph for even longer than Josh has been graduated from the academy. He isn’t going to lie, he’s feeling a rather smug sense of satisfaction for being part of the team that had finally brought him in.
His satisfaction is forgotten briefly, when he looks up from the file in his hands, and through the glass into the interrogation room.
Joseph is staring straight through the glass, directly at him. There’s a smile on his face, and a smug look in his eyes.
Normally, if a criminal tries something like that, Josh is unbothered. They do it all the time; guessing at where they figure someone would be, to try and unnerve the agents, Josh supposes.
So he’s expecting that.
What he’s not expecting, is for Joseph’s smile to grow, and for him to lift one of his cuffed hands in a mocking little wave.
Right then, Josh feels a nagging kind of tug in his stomach. It’s telling him to walk away, run, don't look back.
He really should’ve listened.
Instead, he shakes off whatever bad feelings he has, and determinedly heads into the interrogation room.
