Summary
Sometimes Richie felt empty. Some days he woke up with glazed over eyes, and hair that was a mess, and a gaping hole in his chest, and some days he was fine until some kind of switch inside of him flipped and he suddenly shut down, unable to feel anything through the thick haze surrounding him; either way he could never see it coming. Some days his head felt like it weighed a million pounds and his skin felt tight and his face felt fake.
Days like those, Richie didn’t really feel up to living. Days like those, Richie wasn’t in control, not really. Days like those his body dragged itself out of bed and through his daily routine like some kind of puppeteer; he was on autopilot. Days like those it felt like he was trapped somewhere inside of himself- somewhere cold and dark and completely alone. He felt like he was trapped, and needed someone to break him out of himself, only he didn’t really even care enough to shout for help.
It was one of those days.

There was a long pause and then, because Richie was never good at dealing with long pauses- “Your mom didn’t tell you? We’ve finally decided to elope.”

“My Abuela said it,” Silvio insists. “She said you have to wear the hat, because you have a pale ass so you’re going to get skin cancer and die before Lance even wakes up.”
Keith looks between the children and the hat, too confused to glare, sweaty and horrid from pulling weeds beneath the scorching sun. “What?”
“That’s wrong,” Nadia complains, and yanks her brother down to her level to whisper the correction in his ear.
“Ooh,” Silvio amends. “Tía Veronica said you have a pale ass. My Abuela said you’re gonna die.”
OR
When Lance is fatally wounded during their final battle, the blue lion enters a deep hibernation with Lance inside. Unsure when or if he’ll wake, Keith is forced to wait and watch over him in the company of the people he fears most: Lance’s family.

“Aw,” the druid coos, “So much fire. So much rage in that trembling heart of yours. It’d be a shame if I simply quashed it, wouldn’t it?”
Keith stares straight at the druid. He bores his eyes into the shine of its face and looks his reflection dead in the eye. “Fuck—you.”
The druid tips its head all the way back till its face is far out of sight and it laughs. It shrills and twitches and ticks and shakes. “So much fire!” It shrieks. “So much fire and it’s—”
The druid reaches forward and wraps its long fingers around Keith’s face. They’re like icicles searing his skin with blinding cold. It might’ve drawn blood. He doesn’t know.
“—all gone.” The druid faces him again. “All gone.”
Keith shivers under the touch. He doesn’t understand. “What?”-
A Blade mission goes astray when Keith has an unfortunate run-in with a druid. He falls sick soon after, and is handed into Voltron’s care until he recovers. While he’s there, he contemplates his place in the universe, the depth of his illness and its mysterious connection to Lance, and why he’s not getting better.

The first text message Lance ever got from Keith said are you home
No punctuation, no capital letters, nothing else. Just a question sans question mark, like he knew the answer already.
Probably because he did, if he’d been talking to the rest of the team, anyone at the Garrison, or any of Lance’s siblings. Lance hadn’t left home since he’d been released from the mandatory medical evaluation at the Garrison after the last solo mission that nearly killed him. It’d been nearly a year, and his feet hadn’t left the family farm’s soil since, which was exactly how Lance wanted it.
