The final straw had been when Jack bolted upright in bed at 4am, grasping at his chest with one hand and Robby’s thigh with the other.
“Can’t breathe,” he panted, and Robby had seen his eyes wide, panicked, even in the dim light of the bedroom. “Fuck- ow.”
“That’s it,” Robby hid his alarm behind his unyielding, reserved for the most difficult of patients, ‘I’m-the-attending-and-you-will-listen-to-me' voice. “We’re going in.”
“Not the Pitt,” Jack managed to moan out in-between wheezes, “not the Pitt.”
“Baby, Presbytarian is another 20 minutes away, and Shadyside is even further. God, you could be having a PE-”
“No,” Jack pleaded, “not the Pitt.”

His side was the worst. It was a white-hot, gnawing pain, somehow aching, burning and stinging all at once, and he could feel the lacerations there stretching nauseatingly with every movement, shards of glass digging in between his ribs. With another step, the room tilted, and he palmed the frame of the bathroom door for stability, leaning forward as he panted.
A little boy, bottom lip trembling, knees grazed, looking for his mom.

Robby frowned and took Jack in. His hair was unstyled in soft silvery curls - normal for a day off - but damp at the edges, sticking to his temples. A droplet of sweat ran down his jaw in front of his ear. There was a flush over his cheeks but the rest of him was deathly pale and drawn. His eyes had a distinct glassy sheen, glazed and unfocussed, the kind someone gets when...
Robby placed his palm against Jack’s forehead. Bingo.
“Jesus, that’s one hell of a fever, baby.”
Oh, Jack thought, yeah. In his exhausted, feverish daze, he hadn’t quite put that together.

“Don’t start a fight you can’t win,” Dana gave him a stern look over the rim of his glasses, “I’m a nurse, you can’t hide an upper respiratory tract infection from me.”
Jack blinked dumbly.
“Come on,” she urged, “up.”
Dana grabbed him by the arm and forced him to stand, forcing the bottle of water and orange juice into his empty hands.
“I can’t just take a forty-five minute break in the middle of shift,” Jack protested, but followed her lead as she pulled him towards the lounge by the arm.
“I’m not gonna say the ‘q’ word, but we’re doing okay so far,” Dana countered, nodding up at the admittedly (and rarely) under-control board. “We can lose you for a little while you take a nap, you’re not that indispensible,” she bumped his shoulder with hers, winking.

Summary
Terrible summary ahead!
Two months ago Bucky turned up on Steve's doorstep. Now they're living and fighting with the rest of the team but Bucky still spends all of his down-time hiding out in his room. When his arm is damaged in a battle he is forced to go to Tony for help. This focuses on how he deals with being around someone other than Steve, being touched after Hydra, his guilt over his past actions, and Tony's reaction to everything.
Tony's not what Bucky was expecting. His response to the news that Bucky killed Howard and Maria is unanticipated and his handling of the repairs are surprisingly tolerable.
(Tony hints at Steve/Bucky, but there is no actual Stucky in this story. Neither one of them are functional enough for that at this point. There is background Tony/Pepper mentioned.)
This has a fair amount of angst on Bucky's part and a lot of guilt about what he's done but has a happy ending.
This is really just a lot of talking, nothing much actually happens. It's the result of me obsessing about this potential conversation since CATWS came out.Bookmarked by rxgers
