Summary
Severus and Hermione have spent weeks assuming the worst of each other until one evening everything changes. Finally, Hermione makes a surprising demand. This could either go really well or completely backfire.
His face softened as he slowly reached out and cupped her cheek. "It's too hard, Hermione."
Though taken aback by his gentleness and his touch, she managed to ask, "What's too hard?"
He studied her for several moments, softly stroking her face the whole time. Finally, he removed his hand and said, "Having you... yet never really... having you."
His enigmatic answer told her almost nothing. However, his eyes… Oh, gods, why is he looking at me like that? "You have me, Severus. I'm your wife," she said, hoping to get some clarification.

Summary

Severus Snape had always been excellent at recognizing patterns. It was part of what had made him such a successful spy during the war, and likely the only reason he was still alive. That is exactly how he knew something catastrophic was coming for him specifically, he just didn’t know what.
There was no way he could have anticipated his catastrophic event being the arrival of a new master, a curly-headed witch covered in scars and surrounded by secrets, whom he would serve endlessly.

What begins as a cigarette shared in the dark becomes something neither of them planned for: a marriage of convenience, a shared set of rooms at Hogwarts, and the slow, careful work of two people learning to trust again.
Hermione is hiding an enormous secret. Severus is further along in his healing than he expected, and not as far as he thought. Hogwarts has opinions about both of them. And Fenrir Greyback has not forgotten what Bellatrix promised him.
A slow burn built on consent, therapy, breathing exercises, chocolate biscuits at 3am, and the radical act of asking before you touch someone.
Updates will be posted every Sunday / Monday. I own nothing. Not the rights to the Harry Potter universe, not to the Cure songs, not to the Killers lyrics. I'm just playing with the world these artists created.

Incidentally, to Severus Snape - exhausted and war weary - that sounds like just the thing.
High-powered Barrister at Law Hermione Granger disapproves, of course.
