“Do you want to come in?” Heather said abruptly, casually. A challenge. Robby felt her words hit him in his knees, a heat crawling up his body. Of course, yes, yes, yes.
Instead, he hesitated. “I’m your attending. I’m supposed to be, you know, supervising you. Teaching you—” He would have slapped himself in the face if he could. You’re ruining this. Stop talking.
Heather bit her lip, raised an eyebrow. “So teach me something, then.”

Summary
“There’s this saying between Jujutsu sorcerers," Fushiguro says. "Don’t let anyone get close enough to make leaving an echo. And it goes both ways.” He turns around to pick up the gym keys from where he’d left them, and Nobara only knows him well enough to be able to tell he’s hiding his face from her. “So it’s not about you. Really, it’s not for your sake at all.”
Nobara gets up slowly, legs sore. “So you’re telling me,” she says, flatly, because that’s just what she does, “that we’re at the ‘it’s not you, it’s me,’ stage of the relationship? That’s pretty unmanly of you, Mister Righteous.”
Fushiguro snorts. “This isn’t a story about heroes, Kugisaki,” he says. “The sooner you understand that, the easier it’ll be in the long run.”
Or, when Kugisaki Nobara turns fifteen, she dyes her hair bright orange, packs her life into seven separate polka-dotted suitcases, and leaves home. It’s the easiest thing she’s ever done.

“Hey, are you free after work?” he asks, and Mel hears the absolute silence that drops down over them, all the movement on either side of them going still.
“Yes, I am,” Mel answers eagerly. Cassie abruptly begins shuffling through her locker louder than before, and Mel feels one of her eyebrows twitch, tries not to let it show on her face. “Do you think you could fix the air conditioning today?” Frank nods, rewards her with a megawatt grin. She can feel them staring at each other an amount of time that could be considered inappropriate; she can’t think of a good reason to look away.
“Wow, King,” Santos says, breaking the silence, and Mel watches Frank glance at Santos behind her, over her shoulder. “Asking Langdon to fix your pipes for you? Didn’t think you had it in you.”
“Santos,” Frank warns, and Mel watches a muscle jump in his jaw.
“He’s not fixing my pipes.” Mel tilts her head, turning to face Santos. “He’s fixing my air conditioning. It’s been broken all week.” Santos’s lips part, her eyebrows coming together, and then a slow, terrible smile spreads across her face.
(Mel's air conditioner breaks. Frank doesn’t know a lot about them but finds a way to help)

Just then, the last of the blood slipping from that boy into Spike, him and Dru grabbing for each other with their fangs in each other’s mouths, then walking hand in hand up Fifth Avenue, all the way back home, a little prayer croaks out of him, before he realizes enough to grab it back—Please. Please, let it be like this always.

“Wow, what a stand-up guy,” Tara says.
She should have some words ready, something moving and perfect that will snap Mom out of it. The two of them will pack up the car and drive out west and set up a life and they’ll call Donny sometimes to see what’s happening at home and hang up before Dad gets on the line.

“How precious are your futures?” asks the Sphinx. “How dear to you is the path you wish to take?” She bares her teeth in a cruel smile, and they all take an involuntary step back.
“Wait,” says Laios suddenly. “Look at her teeth!”
“Yes, Laios,” says Izutsumi. “We’ve all noticed the fangs. This really isn’t the time—”
“No,” says Laios, “those back teeth. She has molars- grinders. That means she’s an omnivore. But she can’t leave this circle, and you saw how nothing ventures within miles of this spot. I bet she hasn’t had anything other than…” he swallows, waving a hand vaguely at the pile of ex-adventurers, “...meat… for years .”
“So…what?” asks Izutsumi.
“Remember how good those marshmallows were?” asks Laios. “And that was only after a couple days without much of a varied diet.”
“You want to bet all of our lives,” Chilchuck says slowly, “on making a Sphinx a nice dessert?”
Laios smiles.

This is how it happens: Buffy Summers is a fifteen-year-old girl, and she worries about checking the right will-you-date-me box and bubblegum lipgloss, and then soot and sweat and the powdery remnants of the undead pile and pile and pile her up until she chokes and chokes and reborns— reborns into a slayer, into veins and muscles and blood of pure power. It’s just unfortunate that through all that coursing, breathing magic, it didn’t reach her brain; she fails math class that year.

And then Santos says — because of course she does, of course they would, of course it’s her fault — “And Langdon would be awful in bed, of course.” Mel blinks.
She somehow hadn’t expected them to get to Langdon, although she acknowledges it’s quite ridiculous of her to not have seen it coming considering the list of male coworkers they were rapidly striking. It’s just — well, Langdon isn’t exactly just a coworker to her, but also a friend. Someone she sends medical memes to and facetimes and watches bad movies on her couch to decompress, someone who pays for her coffee when she’s not looking and talks her down from the egde of a spiral and has met Becca. He’s — He’s Frank to her, and it’s weird to— talk about him that way. Extremely inappropriate, beyond what HR demands.
Still, Mel thinks she should defend his honor, and notes, “I think you might be letting your biases influence your judgment.”

Summary
Six months after Langdon comes back from rehab, Mel is seven minutes late to work.
It’s not like he was waiting for her (he was). He didn’t even know what time she was supposed to be on for her mid shift, not really (he did). He just happened to be charting and see her walk in at 10:07 am, and he knows that no shift schedule Dana has ever gotten her hands on would schedule someone to start at seven past the hour. If it was anyone else, he wouldn’t think anything of it. But Mel has a thing about punctuality that he’s pretty sure it would take a lot for her to abandon, so… seven minutes.
He’s trying his best to log out of the computer without looking frantic so that he can casually — nonchalantly, even — walk over to ask her what’s wrong, but Santos gets there first.
“There’s a guy in south three, keeps asking for you — is he your ex or something?”
Or: Mel has never had a boyfriend. Langdon wants to change that.
