Testament curls over her on the forest floor, hot rain stinging their wounds. Fear rattles their skull. The bitter tar of slaughter breaches their skin—what little reaches Dizzy is blessedly diluted. She's weeping, face pressed to their chest and clutching them tight enough to wrap her wings around them. She doesn't. The black one is bent at a nauseating angle. Testament isn't crying—the Gears did something to their eyes, their tear ducts, and now all they can manage is some pathetic heaving. “They never loved you,” Testament chokes, a disgusting heap of burns and pitchfork punctures. “I love you. I love you. They will not harm you any longer.”
“Of course I will,” Testament says, more sharply than they mean.
Testament helps Dizzy move out.
