"You almost died?" Max says, exasperated and confused at Ash's insistence. He raises an eyebrow.
"Should've. Could've. Would've," Ash mumbles.
Max doesn't know how to respond to that. Instead, he just says, "Sit down, Ash. Please."
Ash looks at the floor, but trudges back to the bed and all but collapses onto it. "What do you want?"
"Can I sit down?" Max gestures to the bed.
Ash rolls onto his back and stares up at Max. "It's your bed," he intones.
"It's not," Max insists. "You're using it, and I'm not going to take that from you. Or take—anything from you. Just tell me what you're comfortable with."
"You that desperate to get in bed with me?" Ash teases, and Max's stomach turns.
Max sits down on the floor without another word.
Max changes the dressing on Ash's stab wound.

Once he's said the words, he can barely remember the question Max asked. Something about where Ash was spending time—nothing he even had any reason to hide. But the defensiveness comes up from within Ash and lashes out, biting like a snake at anyone who cares enough to ask.
Ash feels the blood drain from his face.
Ash waits for the other shoe to drop. Ash waits for a blow that never comes. Ash lets himself be forgiven.

Of course, touching the stars was going to have to wait, because he'd lost that dream the moment his parents had died when he was ten years old—the moment he had watched that starship explosion and felt a bit of his heart die with them. He'd lost that dream when he was transported to prison and then to a place called Pogtopia.
He'd lost that dream when he watched hundreds of children starve on the streets of Pogtopia. When he and two friends become the lone survivors of the Red Planet's Genocide. When they were rescued, and he was captured again.

Homecoming AU.
Ben and May divorced before Peter’s parents died, so when Ben is murdered Peter goes into foster care. It takes just a tiny taste of superpowers for Peter to decide he doesn’t want to put up with his horrible foster father anymore—the streets are infinitely more appealing. All he wants is to be Spider-Man anyway.
So he leaves.
Simple.
Simple, that is, until Iron Man needs Spider-Man’s help. Peter isn’t about to turn down an opportunity to fight alongside Tony Freaking Stark, but he also isn’t going to let his hero know that his recruit is a fifteen-year-old homeless dropout.
