Summary
It’s Friday and it’s *hot* in Henrietta, so hot the air feels denser than it rightfully should, shimmering above the charcoal asphalt of the parking lot, and Ronan Lynch *hates it*. Hates the sun, hates that he’s actually allowed Gansey to drag his ass to Aglionby that day, hates that both Gansey and Adam have already left for one of Gansey’s parents’ parties which he’d frankly rather die than attend himself. Hates it all.
His BMW is one of the last cars sitting in the parking lot. Kavinsky’s rabid polar bear of an EVO is surprisingly still there as well, gleaming in the afternoon sun like a wet bone.

Ronan had developed a rare routine, in the months since he and Adam had gotten together.
On Sundays, he would drive to St. Agnes’ - but this had always been routine, for him. In the parking lot, he’d wait for his brothers to arrive from D.C.; once they had, they’d all go into Mass together, and Ronan would pray to be absolved of his multitude of sins. Sometimes, he went to confession afterwards; most times, he didn’t. Most times, immediately after the service was done, Ronan would leave the church through one door, enter through another, and emerge in Adam’s apartment.

Adam knew he had kind of a hard time indulging in things. He mostly found that this didn’t cause too many problems - refusing to go out to dinner or buy that new pair of shoes meant more money in his savings account, after all, and that was never a bad thing. It only became an issue when refusing to go out to dinner meant skipping dinner, and not buying that new pair of shoes meant wearing the ones with holes in them for another two months.
So he was trying to get better. He was trying to get better at wanting things. One of the things he was trying to get better at wanting was Ronan Lynch, because Ronan wanted him, as well, and that, for some reason, turned the want into a different, more pressing kind of hunger. Which was why he was driving to the Barns at just after midnight, coming off of a six hour shift, needing to get up for another one in five hours.

Summary
As easy as it would have been for Ronan to pick himself off the floor and drive to the comfort of the Barns, he couldn’t do it. There were a variety of factors in play, despite the heat (or maybe because of it), that were playing into Ronan’s decision and he didn’t have the willpower to put a stop to any of them.
One: It was hot, which Ronan would have been happy to avoid, except;
Two: Clothing became more optional in the heat. That fact, in and of itself, was enough reason to stay on Adam’s floor, except;
Three: The heat had somehow turned Adam - solid, immovable Adam - into liquid. And for that, Ronan wouldn’t have moved if the church had caught fire under his fingertips.

Ensue, a whole heap of pining and Ronan trying his best to become a supportive friend, while facing the unavoidable fact - that he is still in love with Adam.

Entropy had stuck with Ronan as the only bullshit involved in chemistry that he could actually see as feasible. Not because he’d ever understood the intricacies of molecular structures or anything like that, but because of moments like this one: where the universe had decided to condense an intense amount of chaos together into a single instant and dump it on him without warning, and he was all at once spitting out his beer and tripping sideways over a to-scale cardboard model of Henrietta’s post office and listening to Gansey say “what’s wrong?” in the most Gansey voice ever used and looking—yes, looking with his own damn eyes—at a nude photo of Adam Parrish on his own damn phone.
