Summary
He was an outsider, but instead of being put on a pedestal by himself, he was grouped together with the 7 and held at their feet. He wasn’t singular. He was another member in a quest he never wanted to be apart of.
Things only got worse when the war ended. Jason wasn’t Greek or Roman enough to fit in anywhere, he wasn’t special, he wasn’t the best swordsman, he wasn’t the most powerful.
He was mediocre. Old news. Stagnant in all the wrong ways.

The quest to earn Jason’s first college recommendation letter had gone almost too well. The second one was currently trying to make up for this by being a massive pain in the ass.
After trips to three different sacred libraries and hours of stumbling through a cave system in the dark, Piper should have wanted nothing more than to have this stupid quest over and done with.
Except, well… the completion of their quest required them to find the Mnemosyne—the Fountain of Memory. And considering no one had ever bothered to fix the mess that the Mist had made of Leo and Piper’s memories, or the mess that the Queen of the Heavens had made of Jason’s… maybe there were things Piper wanted just a little more than going home.

As Nico says the words, Jason has that feeling again. The feeling that Jason has when something’s familiar, like he did when he first looked at Nico’s face.
“Nico, have you told me that before?”
Jason’s sure that no one’s told him that since he was found at the Grand Canyon. No one’s given him comforting words like this, not Piper, not Leo. Not anyone.
“Maybe.”
“I remember it,” Jason furrows his brows. He tries to think back when he first heard the words that Nico just said, where he heard the first call that became an echo. Jason rubs his eyes; a headache might be coming his way from trying to think that hard about things he can’t possibly remember. “Gods, I wish I could remember it.”
Nico nods, but he’s frowning.
“I wish you could too.”

The first and only time Jason celebrates his birthday—albeit quietly, only amongst him & Piper—ends up to be the same day Percy & Annabeth fall into Tartarus. This fic explores that; mainly guilt, the idea of what you "should be," and most importantly, a Piper insistent in her way of trying to brighten his day. And, of course, a little bit of loving someone like the world (but 'failing' because it's not the type of love it's expected to be).

When Grover first caught a whiff of Mr. Jackson’s scent, he knew something was up.
Sure, the man looked normal enough from Grover’s brief glimpse of him through the windshield as Mrs. Jackson’s Toyota Prius trundled up the long driveway. He had sunburnt shoulders and was still wearing a pair of bright yellow bib-and-brace oilskins, like he’d just come back from his job on the fishing trawler.
But once the car got close and Grover caught Mr. Jackson’s scent, all of Grover’s fur stood on end.
Because beyond the sweat, salt, and dead fish he could pick up, there was a strangely synthetic human smell. It was sort of like how Fanta smelt like oranges. Which was to say - and a sharp stab of anxiety wormed its way into Grover’s heart at the thought - Mr. Jackson smelt like he was a fake human. Was Mr. Jackson a monster in disguise?

Of course Ronan keeps Adam’s fucking schedule in the back of his mind. He’s odd and devoted like that. “My hours changed.”
“So tell them to change them back.” And Adam knows Ronan knows. Ronan thinks something is up and is prodding at it just to piss Adam off, circling him and backing him closer and closer to the corner. He feels heat climb up the back of his neck like an insect in the dead of summer, and tries to imagine ice water dousing him.
Adam grits his teeth. “It doesn’t work like that.” He’s fortunate that he has a job at all, he can’t afford to be particular about hours, especially with how long he spends at school, anyway. “Don’t be an ass.”
