Nicholas leans against the concrete wall by the station. He has to look up to meet Euijoo’s eyes, just a tiny lift of his chin. Euijoo keeps seeing the vague outlines of what Nicholas is thinking seconds before he even thinks it. In this industry—in this awful, vapid industry—it’s a virtue. Euijoo hasn’t spoken to someone this open, who makes him want to open up like this in years.
“I guess I just keep wondering,” Nicholas says, shy and unflinching in equal measure, looking right at him. “Does anybody really know you?”

“Yeah, why not,” Nicholas says with a laugh of his own, slumping back into his seat with crossed arms, a satisfied cat. “I wear a couple dresses and skirts and whatnot; you tell your uncle your girlfriend can’t speak Korean and then, boom. You and I get to live it up on the beach… Besides, I know how much you miss it there.”
He clears his throat, but his voice cracks anyway when he adds, “What kind of best friend would I be if I didn’t do this for you?”

(It may be raining, but it’s still hot, sticky and humid and making the corners of Euijoo’s brain melt into taffy, thoughts sluggish. He plunges a hand into the cooler by his side to shock himself into some sense, while also grabbing a beer for Fuma. Their fingers brush, water dripping from one hand to the other. Euijoo catches Nicholas’ eyes follow the trail of a drop that lands on Fuma’s collarbone when he takes a swig, traveling all the way down to his navel. Euijoo knows, because he’s looking too.)

Nicholas forces himself to look down at his lap. Vertigo hits him quick and hard. His hands are—not his hands. They’re thin, tapered, a couple shades darker. He blinks a few times. His brain tells them to move and then they do. No delay. He looks at them, clenching and relaxing: bone, muscle, sinew, tendon, skin. All under his control.
These are Euijoo’s hands. They shake a little. He has to swallow a scream.
On the first day of summer, Nicholas wakes up inside Euijoo's body.

It’s true that Euijoo learned Japanese off of almost nothing but animated films, elementary school practice handbooks, and the members, but Mandarin is different. Mandarin is quick, sharp, and precise. Nicholas speaks his native language like he dances—he holds that intensity in his fingers and carves it into refined accuracy, fluidly welding together sentences like he rolls his body under the glaring stage lights.
It’s different, Euijoo wants to tell him. Like our native languages. Like us.
