Jason groans. He swats at the intruder’s hand, his movements sluggish and uncoordinated with the heaviness of sleep still clinging to them. It earns him a bark of laughter that wafts over the scent of peppermint toothpaste, but the touch of calloused fingers on Jason’s skin lingers. He takes a deep breath, counts to ten, and blinks his eyes open to glare at Dick’s grinning face; his chapped lips a little too close, crinkly eyes a little too—
Blue.

Robin’s face is flushed, the bright, flashing lights of the screen casting a kaleidoscope of shadows across his cheeks; undeniably pink underneath his mask. His gaze darts towards Superboy for just a fraction of a second before he stares down at his laptop again, a little too fast and a little too deliberate— almost like he’s embarrassed that Superboy caught him laughing. His heart’s beating faster, too, and Superboy can feel his own speed up to match its rhythm as he’s struck by the unexpected and unbidden thought that Robin looks… cute when he’s blushing.
Kinda like girls do, but also kinda not— and somehow, he feels like that realisation’s supposed to tell him something, something important, only he can’t seem to grasp what that something might be.
—in which Tim and Kon learn to trust each other, and neither of them knows where to go from there.

Oh, Tim thinks, swallowing hard as the heartbeat inside his chest starts to outrun the one inside his head— the one that is no longer that of a stranger, that no longer belongs to a ghost but to someone made of flesh and blood and unbridled laughter, of sun-kissed skin and obstinacy and ardour. Superboy’s final words to him start echoing through his mind, again and again and again, “Count on it, Wonder! You haven’t seen the last of me!”
Something tells Tim that the other boy might have been right about that.

What he does know is that it was the wrong thing to say, judging by the succession of emotions that passes over the merman’s face: confusion first, then contempt, and then disgust. He flicks a bit of water into Kon’s face and puffs out his chest as he exclaims, “What— ew, no! I’m not going to eat you, for Triton’s sake— where in the seven seas did you get that idea?”
Pirates of the Caribbean, Kon thinks, but is smart enough to keep his mouth shut this time. Well, almost, anyway, because what comes out instead is, “Oi, no need to sound so freakin’ offended— I bet I taste delicious!”

Jason’s heart skips an actual goddamn beat when Dick helps Tim push the babydoll all the way down his body, letting it pool around his hips like a skimpy, red skirt— and revealing a delicate, rose gold ring in Tim’s right nipple that had not been there when Jason had left for his mission with the Outlaws.

He regrets it the moment he catches the mischievous glint in his best friend’s eyes. Kon manages to keep a straight face for all of two seconds before he starts laughing and, with one of his trademark winks, delivers a punchline that would put Nightwing to shame, “Fangtastic!”

“Petrichor,” Jason had mumbled, and at the blank look he had gotten in return, “’s what it’s called, the smell of the rain– petrichor.”
Dick’s answering smile had been half-fond and half-patronising, making the younger boy blush a deep crimson. It had been that little exchange of theirs that had cemented the image of Jason with his nose buried in a book that tended to greet Dick on his rare visits to the Manor.
It had also been the first piece of a puzzle of accidental memories he’d made with Jason, each of them carefully tucked away in the corners of his mind for it to paint a picture with. Except fate had ripped the painting apart before he could ever hope to finish it, and now all Dick’s left with is an incomplete outline of a boy he used to know, sharp in places and blurry in others.
