As Gale spoke, he could feel the weight of his words sinking into the person sitting across from him. It was like casting a spell, but took no effort. Astarion had been staring hollowly into his goblet of blood, but at this he made a faintly interested noise. As if the rule were novel and he was considering the shape of it.
"Second, you will obey me in all things," said Gale. There didn't feel like there was any honest way of softening that. Astarion didn't make any sound at all.
"Third, do not leave the tower without permission." Astarion made another speculative noise, considering this one too. But then his shoulders hunched and his eyes skittered down, as if he didn't want to look at what was about to happen.
"Fourth," Gale said, and paused. He started with some context: "There is a tressym upstairs."
Astarion's head twitched. He looked up at Gale, blinking, startled. He had the air of someone who had been bracing for a blow and instead had just been handed a balloon animal.
"A what?" he asked.

Astarion's eyebrows shoot up.
“Gale Dekarios, you shady thing.”
“I only borrowed it! He's never been awake enough to ask about spares, so. It was easier to just sort it out myself.”
“It would have been easier to ask me,” Astarion points out.
“Mmmm,” Gale hums, doubtfully. “I don't know if I'd ever consider you the ‘easier’ option, Astarion, I feel that would be doing your commitment to cantankerousness a great disservice.”

The robot thrums to life. Gale scrambles to his feet, stands in front of it, and relief overfills his lungs until he’s forced to sigh it out.
His eyes open slowly, white lashes framing red irises. Those irises aren’t real, of course, but a screen. A slow turning circle spins within them, an indicator that the bot is booting up. A minute passes, Gale almost starts to worry, but then his eyes flicker to look like normal pupils, and the robot speaks. The movement of his mouth isn’t perfectly synced to the words, and he sounds like he's made of the same quality of AI that runs on Gale’s phone, but… he’s working.
“Greetings. I am your personal companion. In order to begin setup, please designate my name.”
He’s working! And he needs a name—but Gale has been thinking about this since he purchased the model. @*10N. “Your name is Astarion.”
“Astarion. Is this correct?”

Summary
Astarion and Gale are two sides of the same coin. They know what it's like to hunger, what it's like to be someone else's tool, both used to fulfill someone else's goals. Astarion has never been allowed to love, has only ever wanted peace and safety. Gale has searched for love his entire life, yearning to find someone who wants to be loved by him. They both want someone who sees them.
This is my take on Astarion and Gale learning what it means to find someone who sees beyond what they can offer (Astarion's body, Gale's magic). The story of what it's like to fall in love with someone who might just love you back.
Begins in the prequel, set during Act One, when they both feel drawn to one another, but there's not a time nor place for anything deeper. It continues, months later, after the brain, after Baldur's Gate, in the magnificent city of Waterdeep, a fresh start for them both, and time to heal from wounds neither knew they had.
