Hua Cheng tried to say something, to reassure Xie Lian that he was okay, that he didn’t need to be concerned. But he couldn’t speak. His throat, pierced by an arrow. Drowning in his own blood. All that came out was another pained whimper.
So much for pretending to be fine. Xie Lian was wide awake in an instant. He breathed out sharply and lifted a hand to cup Hua Cheng’s cheek, a worried look on his face.
“Oh my love, why didn’t you wake me up?”

Summary
Shen Qingqiu had always felt a small disconnect from his wings, coming from a world that didn’t have them. Like the opposite of phantom-limb syndrome. Things that were a part of him, yet felt separate.
They were cool in concept, yet gave him no end of trouble.
Like old wounds, they ached and cramped in bad weather or exhaustion. As if the Original Goods had gotten them broken in places multiple times before healing away the physical signs as he cultivated.
Also, they were just annoying!
They required so much upkeep! Feathers constantly shed and had to grow in, which was itchy as hell. When they grew in, they did so with sheaths you had to scratch off as they emerged, but you couldn’t scratch too hard because OOPS, was that a blood feather? If it was, congrats on just breaking open what was basically a straw directly to a vein. Better pluck it all out from the root if you ever want it to stop bleeding! And then you had to heal the gaping hole the correct way, or the next pinfeather might not grow back correctly.
…Shen Qingqiu might not have devoted his patience.
If he were to be honest, he might have slipped up a little in regards to the care of his wings as of late.

Carefully, almost in loving reverence, Hua Cheng gathered Xie Lian's foot and proceeded to bandage it expertly. Then, he examined his legs and arms for any cut or bruise – cleaning the cuts, pressing his lips on each bruise.
Xie Lian gasped, eyes wide, the trembling in his body increasing ten folds. His burning cheeks were turning to lava, frying his brain in the process. He couldn't understand what was happening. Why was Hua Cheng acting this way? It didn't make any sense!
"S-San Lang, ah!?"
After getting rid of a spirit in a neighboring village, Xie Lian attempts to return home fast enough, but ends up injuring himself along the way. He doesn't dare call Hua Cheng who went back to Ghost City, knowing he is busy. But maybe that's a mistake.
Maybe, just maybe, there's a chance the Ghost King actually wants to help him out.

The past week had been…strange. Shen Yuan did not believe in the supernatural, not like his meimei and er-ge. He was more like his da-ge in that sense, always rolling his eyes at their silliness and checking out dark rooms when the floors creaked for them to ensure there was no ghost. However, if there was ever a time he would be more inclined to believe his siblings and what they always said, it would be this past week.
Things he couldn’t explain kept happening all over his apartment. He’d find weird notes written in code in strange places, like his bathroom or kitchen, often in English and calling him Cucumber-bro and saying something about a dreamscape. Sometimes, he’d hear phantom voices. Sometimes exasperated, sometimes desperate, sometimes just sad.
Sometimes, he’d even see shadows, but they were just out of the corner of his eye and gone the instant he noticed them.
The most relevant, however, was what captured his attention now.
