Ilya does mind. Hearing it said back to him, almost makes him flinch, a sudden and brittle sound right next to his ear that he fails to recoil from in time. But he swallows back the bitter truth and replies, “Of course not. If that is what you want.”
He waits, sitting on his living room couch, phone pressed painfully against his ear, his other hand gripping his knees till his knuckles blanched. He could feel his own heart rattling behind his ribs, pulse rockingloudly. His mind was an echo of alarm, demanding of him: Why isn't Shane saying anything?
It was the loudest silence he’s ever lived through, until Shane finally said, “Okay.”

Maybe Ilya wants someone who will let him take charge. Shane isn’t that kind of person; he desperately clings to control with everything he has. He folds his clothes before sex and cleans his windows after Ilya fucks him against them. He controls his food portions, nutrition, his training schedule, image, and public appearances. He’s competitive. He would never roll over and take anything he didn’t want to.
The thought makes his stomach clench. The one place he doesn’t cling desperately to control is in the bedroom. He lets himself be molded, shaped, and coaxed into anything Ilya wants when they fuck. To be clear, Ilya is grateful the rookies aren’t growing up the way he did in the NHL. Ilya took the hazing to the chin – humiliation rituals, beat downs, grueling practices to prove he could “hang” with the big guns on the team.
