She takes her mask off.
She's done it a few times before. Rarely, but it happened. But always after George insisted she'd do it. A strong nose, sand-colored hair that falls onto her eyes, a slight upturn of the lips, even when she's not smiling. Freckles adorn her cheeks and nose, and a beauty mark sits next to her eye.
A carbon copy of her. Save for the dark golden eyes. There's no scar that nicks her upper lip as well but it's very clearly her, it's always been her and George knows it can't be a coincidence.
"Hi," she whispers.

When they dragged Dream in chains to the prison, the night dead and cold as they let him bleed out, throwing him to Sam and arguing angrily between themselves, the mask was the first thing to go. It was half shattered already, bits of wood falling to the ground in splinters, like teeth Dream thought. Rows of teeth. More and more of it fell away as they walked across the plains, until only half of it remained – a sickle moon pressed against his cheekbone.
Sam lifted it from his face, his fingers ice against the hot blood rushing down Dream’s nose.
The mask dropped.

Summary
George's heart leaps into his throat when he sees just how much danger his dragon's in.
Sapnap's pinned to the ground by a massive dragon bristling with spikes, one paw shoving his face into the dirt and keeping him trapped no matter how much he whines and squirms. Dark smoke pours from the wild dragon's jaws as it sinks its teeth into Sapnap's saddle, tugging hard enough to lift Sapnap's chest off the ground.
It's going to kill him.
George reacts without thinking. He grabs onto the dragon's tail because it's the only thing he can reach, yanking as hard as he can, and the startled grunt it lets out is followed by its tail slamming into his chest.

George is a dragon rider, Sapnap's his dragon; though they don't have a shared language, they've learned to understand each other. When they crash in dragon territory, they run into a wild dragon named Dream who hates humans and would like nothing better than to kill George. Unfortunately for him, Sapnap is willing to protect George with his life, so Dream is forced to put up with a human living in his cave while Sapnap heals. . .and in the process, Dream and George both learn how many things they've been wrong about.

Summary
After George was dethroned, he couldn't bear to be around Dream any longer, so he left. When he finally returned, his home was a completely different world, and Dream was locked away in prison. George needed to readjust to life in Dream SMP, but he was dealing with the pesky memories of a better time and the knowledge that he couldn't avoid Dream forever weighing him down.
Basically what I headcanon as the explanation for George's disappearance after he stated he didn't want to be in lore and the natural sequence of events that follows learning your manipulative boyfriend that you are still hopelessly in love with is in prison. CHECK BEGINNING NOTES FOR TRIGGER WARNING!!
