Summary
Naim has almost forgotten what it's like to feel those cruel hands around his throat. It’s so lightning fast, so strong, it actually shoves the breath from his lungs like a pastry roller, flattening his body from the feet up. He flails uselessly as he chokes, clawing at its forearm. Not-Ryan smiles at him, a detached, empty thing, dragging its eyes up and down Naim’s prone body, before it does something it has never done before. In the few months since they leave Bandee, Ryan and Naim experience a youth shelter, a birthday, and several hard weeks out on the street. The entity goes through its own evolutions, too.
