“There will always be someone willing to listen,” Baran says, voice softer now, more deliberate. “Someone who will meet you with kindness, with empathy, with compassion. Because you do the same, even when you don’t realize it.”
Trinity doesn’t move, she doesn’t speak. She doesn't have anything to say, not even a cocky comeback or a sassy retort. And the worst part of it all is how much relief Baran’s words bring to her.
Like a weight has been lifted off her chest, and it’s a sudden feeling that actually has her heaving to have a deep breath.

Victoria would say it’s because she’s drunk, her brain a half-second behind her mouth, “That’s hot, no?”
Cassie barks out a laugh, leaning forward against the bar, enough to catch others' attention.

When the laughter dies down, Cassie exhales, elbow sliding onto the bar as she props her cheek in her palm, taking another languid sip.
“No,” Cassie says.
Then, after a moment of silence, their eyes still locked, Cassie continues, voice quieter “That’s usually the part where it gets complicated.”
