He glanced over, eyes flicking from her face down her body once, before fixing his attention back on her books.
“I was under the impression you were an investigative journalist,” he quipped, then lifted a hand to the spines.
“Don’t touch my books,” she snapped. “You can’t just invite yourself in.”
“The witch downstairs implied your assistant could.” He gestured to himself with the raised hand, turning his obedience at not messing with her things into something distinctly insouciant. Prat.
And then his words registered.
She jolted back like she’d been slapped, blinking against the cognitive assault. “What? No. You’re claiming that you are my new research assistant?”
“Cracked it in one,” he drawled, sliding his hands into his trouser pockets.

It’s been five years of muted agony. He’s not sure he can do six, and so the words are out before he can rationalize it.
“Happy anniversary.”
She’s halfway down the hall but pauses instantly, looking over her shoulder at him. He can’t interpret her expression, not with the way his head is pounding with a sudden rush of blood at his daring, and at the way her entire body has turned to face him.
He barely restrains himself from sweeping his gaze down her form, something he does frequently whenever her attention is elsewhere. They haven’t had sex since Lyra’s conception was confirmed – two years, eight months, thirteen days – but he comes for her all the time.
“I didn’t think you’d remember.” There’s a tinge of wonder in her voice.
He manages to keep the incredulity out of his. “Of course I did.”

Seb’s golden brown hair, tied back and boasting a frizzy halo to rival her own, filled her gaze as she averted her eyes and the world blurred. She could only hazily make out his hands placed on the carrier sitting atop the desk, as though he was mid benediction. A cat-christening. A catechism?
Hermione might be going mildly insane. The puns were always the first indication.
