Or, Aidan and his friends have always made gay jokes. They’re funny, they’re a hit with the fans, and they work wonders in carrying a bit along. It’s when recording a video for Imaginary Friends that one joke lands a bit differently for Aidan, and from then on, his world is spun a bit off its axis.

Summary
John Walker knows his reputation hasn’t been the cleanest in the past few years. When he’s inadvertently slotted in a new team of ex-mercenaries and reformed assassins after the showdown in New York, he figures this is as good a second, er, third chance as he is going to get. He can’t fuck up anymore.
There were a few kinks to that plan, however. Namely, Bob. Always hovering, always present, always off-kilter. And Walker doesn’t know where he slots into the equation. It messes up his equilibrium.
So when an off-world sorcerer comes in and ties their fates into one, Walker is forced to confront his new reality, his feelings (scary), and then some. Chaos ensures. Because when has it ever been easy in his life?

After the New York incident —classified as a Level A Dark-Class Anomaly— in which multiple civilians were absorbed by an entity of unknown origin (later identified as "The Void") during an operation led by the Thunderbolts team, the Sentinel Protocol was activated.
The most unstable asset, Robert Reynolds (alias: Sentry), remains under constant surveillance. He has been permitted to continue operating within the team under strict restrictions and designated supervision.

John isn't quite sure of his role in the new and fragile team he's ended up with after getting used to being assigned one all these years as a soldier and a shadow operative.
Everyone else seems to fall into some designation or other—leader, strategist, moral compass, father figure, muscle—all of them pieces falling in a puzzle that John can't seem to fill because the others fit better, and the thought slowly pushes him into a frustrated despair.
John spirals, becoming one with the sofa. He doesn't know that something else is wrong with him. Something darker and more sinister.

John wakes up in a cold sweat, drawing deep, labored breaths, feeling like his chest is about to cave in.
His bloodshot eyes focus, and with it comes the chilling realization.
A sinister shape, pitch black, is straddling him, a figure so utterly devoid of light that it's silhouetted by the already dark background that is his room.
It only takes a second for him to catch on. He's seen this figure before, hovering above New York the day Bob transformed into Sentry.

He stops in front of the trophies lined up on a shelf — the replicas of Max’s championships and the original, gleaming in the center. For a second, admiration flickers across Charles’s face. Max knows that look; he knows Charles wants that feeling someday, and part of him can’t blame him.
Charles turns, and Max sees a quiet smile on his face before it fades. “I, um… I received an invitation. From… The Invitation,” he starts, clearing his throat, and Max notices the nervous way his hands fidget.
“Ah, what an original name. Congratulations?” Max offers, barely containing a smirk.
Charles narrows his eyes, exasperation creeping in. “There’s a catch.”
“Do I even want to know?”
“They also invited you.”
Max’s expression morphs into an exaggerated look of shock, complete with wide eyes and raised brows. “Wow, what a shame, then.”

Charles levels him with a penetrating gaze. “If you really think so, then you’ve never paid attention to a thing I’ve said.” He folds the napkin he had crumpled in his hand. “If that was the truth, I wouldn’t be sitting here. I wouldn’t be ‘laying around my apartment all day’. I’d be winning races for Ferrari.”

Pascale looks at him. For a moment it is an odd look. But that quickly melts into a smile. One that is gentle around the eyes, and soft on the mouth. Somehow, it makes Charles feel young again — younger than how he already feels; twenty-one in a world where he is twenty-five.
“You don’t have to imagine it, mon garçon,” she says quietly. “It has already happened.”
